Brooks, 62, recounted the conversation during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, Nov. 25, sharing the unfiltered response that his youngest daughter, Allie, 27, had after he said he wanted to get down on one knee for Yearwood, 60.
"So we go out to a nice dinner, me and the three girls. And I’m trying to explain to them that I would like to marry Ms. Yearwood," Brooks recalled. "I said, 'But you girls have to take care of her. If something happens to me, she's your responsibility.'"
The country crooner said the mood of the conversation went "sober" after that, but not for long, because Allie then chimed in with the perfect response to lighten the mood.
She said, "We got your back, bra strap."
"That was it. The conversation was over," Brooks said, adding that his daughters then decided to cook a nice dinner for Yearwood to formally introduce her to the family—even though it may not have gone the way anyone expected.
In fact, Brooks' daughters decided to "eat like dogs" for their first dinner with Yearwood, meaning that they ditch utensils and head face-first into a plate of spaghetti.
While Brooks, Allie and his eldest daughter, Taylor, 31, immediately dug right in, he said Yearwood was hesitant to participate at first. However, she ended up blending in perfectly, especially with Brooks' daughter, August, 29, after both women took turns shoving each other's faces into their plates of spaghetti.
Ever since then, Brooks said August and Yearwood have been like "peas and carrots."
