Friends, starring Jennifer AnistonCourteney CoxLisa KudrowMatt LeBlancMatthew Perry and David Schwimmer, first aired on Sept. 22, 1994, lasting for 10 seasons until 2004 on NBC. On Sept. 20, series creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane and executive producer Kevin Bright appeared on the Today show to reflect on the iconic series.

“I would imagine it’s kind of what it must feel like when your kid turns 30 and you’re like, ‘How did that happen?’ ” Crane said.

The trio also opened up about the constant requests for a spinoff or revival, especially since many of its viewers weren’t even born yet when the show aired.

“We get that a lot,” Kauffman chimed in. “I get emails about it all the time. Everybody has a great idea, and the great idea is: their kids, grown up, doing a Friends show.”

“Oh, no. No, no, no,” Crane said of the possibility of a reboot.

The cast also recently lost one of their own — Perry was found dead face down in his jacuzzi on Oct. 29, 2023. A medical examiner determined the actor died of "acute effects of ketamine" — and the creators said his absence would leave viewers feeling like something was missing on a reboot.

“He’d been fighting the good fight for so long,” Bright said of the actor’s struggle with substance abuse, “and it really did feel like, from the [2021] reunion, that he had finally found some peace.”

“It’s a huge loss, and it does make the 30th a little fraught,” Kauffman added.

For now, Friends fans will have to relive the joys of the show through The Friends Experiences and 30th anniversary bonus content. Friends can also be streamed on Max.
