Fans call out Emmys over 'ridiculous' 2024 nominations: 'Didn't deserve it'
Do you agree with the 2024 Emmy nominations?
The Emmys have already returned this year after the 2023 show was pushed back to January due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, and fans have many thoughts on the shows and stars that received nominations this year. This year's show will air on September 16 in Australia.
Nominations were released today, with Shogun leading the charge with 25 nods, with The Bear closely following behind with 23 – breaking the record for nominations for a comedy series. Only Murders in the Building was the third most nominated show, with 21 nods. However, fans are once again left annoyed that The Bear has been nominated as a comedy at all.

If you've ever watched the show, you'll know it leans more toward the drama category, but it definitely dips a toe into the comedy category.
One Reddit user wrote that the Emmys need to stop pretending "The Bear is a comedy. It's funny. It's not a comedy."
"Maybe this is an unpopular opinion but The Bear is not a comedy show and definitely should not be placed in that category. It is ridiculous that it is," another agreed.
However, one user responded, offering a reason that the show is in that category, writing, "FYI this has nothing to do with the Emmy’s. Hulu submits The Bear as a comedy because they know it can’t compete in the drama category, and they’re allowed to submit to whatever category they want. It’s called category fraud and it’s why you see so many mid dramas nominated as comedies."
"Counterpoint, The Bear could compete in Drama and they know it - they just don’t want it to, because it would stand out less or have tougher competition," one Redditor argued.
"It's also a big thing about it being 30 minutes (usually) instead of an hour," someone else suggested.
Another hit back, "Comedy/Drama categories do not refer to the content of the show. The categories are split up by runtime of the show, comedy is 20-30 minute episodes and drama is 45-60 minute episodes.
"That’s why The Bear is nominated in the comedy categories. People are trying to insinuate that Hulu is committing category fraud when really the fault lies with the Emmys categories themselves."
This is not the case, however, with the Emmys announcing in 2021 that they will not be categorising shows based on runtime. Prior to this, any show that clocked in under 30 minutes would be categorised as comedy and shows that were longer would be in drama.
"It is such a disservice to the actual comedies," another user said. "They're competing against dramatic performances. It's not even a little bit of a fair contest."

The Bear cast defends comedy placement
The Bear cast has previously defended the show's placement as a comedy, with lead actor Jeremy Allen White enthusiastically replying, "Yes!" when asked his thoughts on whether it fits in the category. He has also previously described the show as a "dramedy," telling USA Today in 2022, "[It's] certainly funny at times. We're trying to make it like real life. Sad things can be funny. Funny things can make you sad, and it has all of those moments in it."
