Everything We Know About Theo James's Wife, Ruth Kearney

The Irish actress prefers to avoid the spotlight.

Theo James may be the heartthrob of the moment, but in private, his life is much more low-key. Take his relationship with his wife, Ruth Kearney: the two have been together for over a decade, and have successfully avoided the spotlight since they first started dating in 2009.

"It's interesting being together this long because we have navigated through the very beginnings of our careers," he told the Evening Standard. "That can be hard at times, but also that [brings] certain strengths [to] a relationship."

Ever since James skyrocketed to fame via the Divergent series, and more recently with his roles in The Time Traveler's Wife, The White Lotus, and The Gentlemen, fans have renewed their interest in the pair's love story. Ahead, everything you might want to know about Theo James's wife, Ruth Kearney.

Ruth Kearney is also an actress.

Kearney and James actually met as students at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in Bristol, England. But while James found commercial success at the box office, Kearney was decidedly less interested in fame than her husband. After she landed a role in Netflix's hit series Flaked, she grappled with the concept in an interview with The Irish Mirror.

“That kind of side of it doesn’t bother me," she said. “I’m not in this industry to become famous, I don’t go for jobs because they will make me well known, it’s so hopefully they will lead me on to more interesting roles.”

Apart from Flaked, Kearney also acted in the sci-fi series Primeval, the action movie Jet Stream, and the Irish drama Finding Joy.

The couple worked on a project together.

Speaking of past projects, Kearney and James did join forces for one show in 2019: Sanditon. The British historical drama was adapted from a Jane Austen manuscript and starred Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams), a young woman who moves to the town of Sanditon in an attempt to reinvent herself. James played the leading man, Sidney Parker, in Series 1 of the show, while Kearney played Eliza Campion, his former love interest.

She grew up in Ireland.

In keeping with her interest in privacy, Kearney doesn't share much about her childhood. We do know, however, that the actress grew up in Dublin, Ireland. Returning to the city in 2021, she wrote on Instagram: "Happy to be home."

They married in 2018 and share two kids.

Having dated since 2009, it was no surprise when the couple finally tied the knot almost a decade later in 2018. Little is known about the ceremony. Three years later, Kearney and James welcomed a daughter; then, in 2023, James told a red carpet reporter at the Emmys that they had had a son.

"We have a 4-month-old," he said. "We’re in the thick of it! We have a daughter and then a 4-month-old son." It was a rare admission for the actors, who have kept their family out of the spotlight.

"[Parenthood] definitely changes you in an amazing way," James told InStyle. "It's discombobulating at first, especially with your first child because your whole life changes, but ultimately it makes you—definitely for me, at least—a much more solid person."

She occasionally joins James on the red carpet.

Kearney is a staunch supporter of her husband's projects. In January 2024, she joined him at the 75th Emmy Awards, where he was nominated for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series for his role in The White Lotus. (He lost, but he did win a Screen Actors Guild Award that same year for playing Cameron in the series.) She also hit the red carpet at least twice in 2022: for The Time Traveler's Wife and for the premiere of The White Lotus.
