Everything to Know About 'English Teacher'—The FX Show That’s the Gossip of the Online Hallways
In FX’s new comedy series English Teacher, a love letter of sorts to that central figure in all our lives, creator, star, executive producer and writer Brian Jordan Alvarez is both exasperated and invigorated by his sense of purpose, which is teaching the clever, if at times ridiculously stubborn, Gen Z students in his Austin-set public high school. As a gay teacher, he finds himself in the crossfire of professional and political discussions that overtake his personal life.
While it may be tempting to compare this newcomer to another, the beloved Abbott Elementary on ABC, resist that urge. English Teacher stands on its own, with key differences, like its young adult setting, focus on teachers’ lives and edgy cable tone. It tackles hot-button topics like book banning, censorship, queer teaching and more in the span of the few episodes that are out now.
Read on for more information on the witty series, which is the talk of the digital hallways.

When does English Teacher air?
English Teacher airs on FX at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on Mondays.
Who is in the English Teacher cast?
Brian Jordan Alvarez as Evan Marquez
The eponymous English teacher, Evan Marquez is somehow both the cool high school teacher whose help you seek out and the uncool one you’re schooling in turn. The character approaches his students with empathy and willingness, though he is often looped into side quests planning student-led drag shows and fighting homophobic PTA moms.
Stephanie Koenig as Gwen Sanders
Gwen Sanders, an optimistic and enthusiastic history teacher, is Evan’s best friend and confidante. Intelligent and kind, she often sees the best in situations and others, even when she likely shouldn’t.
Sean Patton as Markie Hillridge
Following in the footsteps of the prototypical gruff softie, Sean Patton’s physical education teacher is a rough but genuine and good-natured soul (if a bit backward). Though abrasive to his students and fellow teachers, he comes through for Evan when he needs it.
Enrico Colantoni as Principal Grant Moretti
A classic manager type, Principal Grant Moretti opts for the path of least resistance when it comes to issues ranging from the school board to parental involvement. While Evan often makes his job more unwieldy, he can’t help but admire his gumption.
Carmen Christopher as Guidance Counselor Rick
Counselor Rick is simply here for a check, perpetually annoyed at the concept of having to work at the school. However, he appreciates spending time with his colleagues, though he feels he is an entrepreneur at heart.
Jordan Firstman as Malcolm
Evan’s on-and-off fling—and former boyfriend—Malcolm is a free spirit, providing a dose of brazen humor to the show. A former teacher at the school and authentic to his core, Malcolm is continually drawing Evan back to him.
Langston Kerman as Harry
A newcomer to the school and transfer from Louisiana, Kerman’s Harry pops up just as Evan is told he cannot embark on a romantic relationship with another colleague. He’s charming and funny, and it’s clear he’ll be part of a will-they-won’t-they arc should the show release more installments.

What is English Teacher about?
Hailing from a team of heavy hitters like executive producers Dave King (Parks and Recreation), Jonathan Krisel (Portlandia) and Paul Simms (The Larry Sanders Show, Atlanta) and co-EPs Kathryn Dean (Reservation Dogs) Jake Bender and Zach Dunn (What We Do in the Shadows, Fallout), English Teacher begins class with a pending investigation against Evan, which is brought by a mom who filed a complaint over an old incident where he and Malcolm shared a kiss in front of the students. As Evan is forced to contend with the clashing of his personal and professional lives, in comes Harry, a hard-to-resist colleague who shows up just as a school board ruling prohibits Evan from engaging in a relationship with coworkers. As the show unfolds, Evan increasingly discovers how to be his true self in the workplace.
