Every Grammy album of the year winner since 1959: Full list ahead of 2025 awards

Winning a Grammy Award is the highest honor in music, representing the gold standard of sonic excellence. But of the individual Grammy categories, none are quite as sought after as the "big four"  – album of the year, song of the year, record of the year and best new artist.

Album of the year, also called the "big award," is given to full-length releases that exceed artistic achievement and quality in the industry, regardless of chart position or sales numbers. In order to be eligible, an album must feature at least five different tracks and have a play time of 15 minutes or have a 30-minute total play time at minimum with no track requirements, according to the Recording Academy.

"This Grammy is awarded to any artist, featured artist, songwriter of new material, producer, recording engineer, mixer and mastering engineer with at least 33% playing time of the album," the Recording Academy states.

Let's take a look at every album of the year winner through the years, and see who was nominated ahead of the 67th annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 2.
