In the lyrics of the song released in August 2023, Cyrus sings, "I know I used to be crazy/ I know I used to be fun/ You say I used to be wild/ I say I used to be young."

The "Midnight Sky" songstress put out "Used to Be Young" as part of her Endless Summer Vacation album, which hosted her Grammy-winning hit "Flowers."

But while looking back on the release of "Used To Be Young" in her cover story with Harper's Bazaar, Cyrus, 31, revealed that Parton, who is actually her godmother, didn't know how to feel about the track at first.

"[Dolly] goes, 'I don’t know if I like that new "Used To Be Young" song because it’s not fair that you’re singing about not being young when you’re young and beautiful. And here I am—I’m like 80—and I’m like, That should have been my song!'" Cyrus recalled Parton telling her.

But while reflecting, even Cyrus revealed she now has second thoughts about her decision to release the song.

“I actually listened to that song yesterday, and I was asking myself, 'Did I really need to put this out?'" she said to the outlet. "It was one of those things that maybe now that I’m a bit more private, I would’ve kept private, but I’m happy to have shared it."

"It just feels like a song that’s so personal that it’s hard for people to relate," Cyrus added—but fans are certainly glad she released it.
