‘The Diplomat’ Creator Says Trump’s Re-Election Will “Absolutely” Influence Netflix Series On Heels Of Season 2 Golden Globes Nom
Debora Cahn doesn’t want Netflix’s The Diplomat to feel like it was ripped from the headlines, but she still draws much of her inspiration from the current political climate, which includes the recent U.S. election.
The series creator, who celebrated the series’ three Golden Globe nominations Monday morning including one for Best Television Series — Drama, told Deadline that the re-election of Donald Trump has “absolutely” impacted her creative vision.

“The next four years are going to be very different from the last four, but much more similar to the world that was in my head when I was first developing the series, which is, how do we interact in the world with other countries when the basic agreements that we’ve had with most of our allies are in question?” she said. “So I’m worried for the world but believe we have plenty to talk about.”
Keri Russell and Allison Janney also received Globes nominations for their roles in the second season of The Diplomat. Russell was also honored for playing U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler in Season 1, while Season 2 marks Janney’s first turn as Vice President Grace Penn.
Seeing both nominated for their work was particularly exciting for Cahn, who says that their interactions are some of her proudest moments from the second season.
“They were really amazing opportunity to go in deep on questions that I think we all spend a lot of time thinking about and and wondering about,” Cahn explained. “These people that we read about in the papers all the time. These decisions that we see when they’re finished — where do those decisions come from? It was really nice to be able to put those conversations on their feet.”
Given that explosive Season 2 ending, it should be no surprise that Janney returning for Season 3, which Cahn confirmed to Deadline on Monday. Production is currently underway in New York and London.
She remained tight-lipped about what’s to come, but she did say: “I know that this is what people always say, like, I’m really excited about next season, but I’m really excited this season. I’m excited to share it with people.”
In addition to Russell and Janney, Cahn also wanted to shout out Season 2 directors Alex Graves and Tucker Gates, who she says “did amazing, amazing work this year, and it’s been such a joy to work with them.” She also gave a nod to executive producer Janice Williams, who “is the magical being who makes it all happen.”
