“Dexter: Original Sin”'s Patrick Gibson Says His Similar Looks to Michael C. Hall 'Definitely Came Up' on Set (Exclusive)
"It definitely helps in getting a role where you're playing the same guy," Gibson told PEOPLE
Patrick Gibson also sees the resemblance between himself and Michael C. Hall.
The 29-year-old Dexter: Original Sin star spoke to PEOPLE at the show's premiere in New York City on Thursday, Dec. 11 about following in Hall’s footsteps and the striking resemblance between himself and the original Dexter Morgan.
Gibson revealed that the actors’ resemblance “definitely came up” on set. “I feel very lucky to resemble him somewhat,” he said.
“It definitely helps in getting a role where you're playing the same guy,” Gibson confessed.
Gibson is starring in the prequel series, which focuses on the forensic blood spatter technician's life as he becomes a secret vigilante serial killer.
“When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness,” according to the synopsis. “With the guidance of his father, Harry, he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.”
Gibson told PEOPLE that although audiences “know Dexter to be this seasoned, slick, well-versed serial killer, the Dexter that we made in Original Sin has not perfected the art of the kill yet.”
“He's also not fully perfected his persona, which as a serial killer is a little bit more of a conscious endeavor than to the regular person,” he said. “We'll see a version of Dexter that is a lot more rough around the edges.”
The actor also opened up about portraying the complex character whose fate has already been written and revealed.
“I think it was kind of equal parts challenging and it's kind of a blessing as well,” he said. “For me, knowing where [Dexter is] gonna end up was just really useful because then you can gauge who is he in this moment and where is he going."
While Hall, 53, won’t be appearing on-screen in the series, he will narrate the show and return as the voice of Dexter’s inner monologue. The new series also stars Christian Slater as Dexter’s father, Harry Morgan and Molly Brown as Dexter’s sister, Debra Morgan.
Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey will also make special guest appearances as CSI chief Tanya Martin and Metro Homicide Captain Aaron Spencer, respectively.
