David Schwimmer Reveals He Once 'Served' Rod Stewart Divorce Papers: 'Thank Goodness I've Never Run Into Him Since'

"You could theoretically run into Rod Stewart sometime! Now he knows to punch you," host Stephen Colbert joked after Schwimmer disclosed the surprising tale

David Schwimmer will never forget the first time he met Rod Stewart!

While appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Jan. 13, the Friends alum looked back at the odd jobs he took on before making it big in Hollywood.

"One summer after my freshman year in college, I was just looking for work, and my mom said, 'Well, you can be a process server for me,'" he recalled. "My mom was a divorce lawyer, and I was the guy who would pop out of the bushes and serve you divorce papers."

At the time, Schwimmer was 18-years-old and felt like "James Bond" as he would often get tips on where people receiving the papers may be.

"Once, oh man, thank goodness I've never run into him since, but I served Rod Stewart," the actor said, laughing. "I don't even know if he knows. I don't think he knows."

In 1984, Stewart and his first wife Alana Stewart divorced after tying the knot in 1979. Sure enough, Schwimmer would have been 18 years old at the time of the filing.

The legendary rocker previously admitted to PEOPLE in 2021 that he was "too young" when the former couple got married. At the time, he was 34 and though he felt he was ready, he really "wasn't."

"When I told my dad I was getting married, he said, 'You're far too young,'" Stewart recalled. "He was right. I still had a lot of living, partying, drinking and shagging to do."

Six years after his divorce, the musician ended up finding love and marrying model Rachel Hunter. However, the couple divorced in 1999 after nine years of marriage.

"When I got married a second time to Rachel [at 45], I really thought she was the one — but I got that wrong," Stewart said.

He ended up meeting his current wife, Penny Lancaster, just days later.

"Rachel broke up with me on a Monday evening, and it was heartbreaking. No one leaves Rod!" Stewart laughed at the time. "But that Saturday night, I met Penny at the Dorchester Hotel in London. The bass player in my band, Carmine, said, 'Listen, you've just come out of a long nine-year marriage. You're not ready yet.' I nearly strangled him!"
