Dave Chappelle Revived A Classic Chappelle’s Show Character On SNL Last Night

Longtime fans of Dave Chappelle were no doubt chuffed to see the controversy-stoking comic back for a fourth stint as host of Saturday Night Live last night, in the first post-holiday-break show of the new year. And if 17 minutes of straight Chappelle stand-up as an opening monologue wasn't enough cause for excitement, the return of a beloved character from the Comedy Central variety series Chappelle's Show sure was.

A spoof of the popular YouTube speed-dating series "Pop The Balloon Or Find Love'' — which has prospective daters harshly pop a red balloon to signal that they're not interested in a given suitor — saw a group of women (played by Heidi Gardner, Chloe Fineman, Sarah Sherman, Jane Wickline and Ashley Padilla) choose between several eligible bachelors, which included cast members Kenan Thompson, Andrew Dismukes and Devon Walker. However, the fellas were soon joined by two familiar faces: Chappell as notorious pimp Silky Johnson and his Chappelle's Show co-star Donnell Rawlings as fellow "player hater" Beautiful and, later, Ashy Larry.

Decked out in a cherry-red fedora, a floor-skimming fur coat, plenty of bling and, in Beautiful's case, a carefully manicured Jheri curl, the dapper duo showed up to pay "salutations" and deliver constructive criticism to the ladies. ("Tangerine is not your color, and there's something in your belly button," Silky judged.) The romantic negging didn't work with any of the single women — especially not Grammy-award nominated rapper GloRilla, who made a cameo in the silly sketch while serving as this week's musical guest. (She performed the crunk-infused hit "Yeah Glo!" as well as a medley of her tracks "Whatchu Kno About Me" and "Let Her Cook.") Ashy Larry's, well, Larry-ness also failed to woo any of the women, leaving "Pop the Balloon" host Arlette Amuli (played by Ego Nwodim) and the rest of the gals running for the hills.
