“Cobra Kai” creators tease Kwon and Tory in Barcelona: 'Karate high jinks ensue'
The creators also preview "next-level karate fights" at the Sekai Taikai and Daniel's search for the truth about Mr. Miyagi in season 6 part 2.
It looks like Miyagi-Do captain Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan) may have more to worry about than earning points on the mat when Cobra Kai season 6 returns on Nov. 15.
In the first five episodes of the final season, Robby and his fellow Miyagi-Do students trained for the prestigious Sekai Taikai tournament — but when they arrived in Barcelona, they learned Tory (Peyton List) had defected to the Cobra Kai dojo, led by "No Mercy" duo John Kreese (Martin Kove) and Kim Da-Eun (Alicia Hannah-Kim).
That's bad news for Miagyi-Do senseis Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), but it may be even worse news for Robby and Tory's romantic relationship. Fans of the duo weren't pleased by the brief shot in the season 6 part 2 trailer of Kwon (Brandon H. Lee) with his arm around Tory — and they could have reason to worry. "With Robby and Tory in a negative place, that leaves the opportunity for Kwon to swoop in there," says Hayden Schlossberg, who created Cobra Kai with Jon Hurwitz and Josh Heald.
The Big 3 indulged Entertainment Weekly with some additional teases about the new episodes, including what's ahead for Tory and Robby, those "next-level karate fights" in the Sekai Taikai, and Daniel's search for the truth about Mr. Miyagi.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: In a recent preview clip, we met Zara (Rayna Vallandingham) and Axel (Patrick Luwis) from the Iron Dragons. Tell us a little bit about how Zara and Axel will figure into part two.
JON HURWITZ: The Iron Dragons are one of the other dojos in the Sekai Taikai, and you'll quickly see, they're a force to be reckoned with. They're a dojo that's based in Hong Kong, with the best of the best students from all over the world. A lot of the dojos are representative of different countries, but this dojo has a little bit more of an international flare. They've been very successful in the Sekai Taikai for a pretty long time. They’re led by Lewis Tan's Sensei Wolf, who is a force in and of himself.
We’ve had this rivalry between Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do for so long, but you're on the world stage right now. There are going to be other dojos out there, and the Iron Dragons are just the tip of the iceberg of the dojos that our competitors have to worry about.
From the little bit we see of him in the trailer, Sensei Wolf seems to come from the "No Mercy" school of teaching.
JOSH HEALD: Their sensei is a three-time former champion of the Sekai Taikai and a powerful figure in the international martial arts community. You'll see pretty early on that Sensei Wolf takes a page from the book of somebody like Kreese more than from somebody like Daniel, in terms of his approach to leadership and the way that he demands the best from his students. But [his method] has also been working, and his dojo has been dominating and he has been attracting the major talent. We've compared them to a dynasty of sorts, like a New England Patriots under [Bill] Belichick and [Tom] Brady. There's something in the special sauce that makes them work, but it also might not be the most emotionally healthy.

Tory-Robby shippers lost their minds from a shot in the trailer that appears to show Kwon and Tori canoodling. What can you tell us about that?
HAYDEN SCHLOSSBERG: Karate high jinks ensue when you go abroad. [Laughs] You take a bunch of teenagers and put them in Barcelona in a karate tournament, and they're all in a hotel — different relationships start to form. I don’t want to say too much about what's going to happen, but there's always drama off the mat. I think with Robby and Tory in a negative place, that leaves the opportunity for Kwon to swoop in there. We’ll see how that unfolds, but be prepared for a little bit of that off-the-mat drama.
Looking at what we see in the trailer, the Sekai Taikai matches look bonkers — especially whatever is going on with the elevated platform.
HURWITZ: It's so fun. In the writers' room, it was important to us to come up with next-level karate fights, competitions that separate this from what you've seen in the All Valley. We came up with this idea for this elevated platform fight and didn't know if we'd be able to pull it off, because we have the budget of a 22-minute comedy. So, everything we're doing in the stunt world is us already stretching in major ways.
But we got with our line producer in Atlanta, Bob Wilson, and we were walking around the Eastern, which is the location that we were filming at. He’s looking up there and he's like, “It’s a concert venue. There have been platforms that have been lowered from the ceiling at this place. Maybe we could pull off what we're looking to do.” I'm not going to get into the details of that fight, but as Mike Barnes said in part one, the Sekai Taikai is a dangerous place, and our fighters are put in positions that are at a level of danger quite a bit higher than what they've dealt with before.

In the fifth episode, Daniel was flabbergasted when he found Mr. Miyagi’s bloodstained headband from the Sekai Taikai. Give us a little tease of where this storyline is headed.
HEALD: We never drop a storyline, so that mystery is followed. Daniel is somebody who is very inquisitive and will ask deep questions of anybody and everybody to see where that might lead him. There are explosive things that happen as a result of him digging a little further than maybe he should.
All five episodes of Cobra Kai season 6, part 2 premiere Friday, Nov. 15, on Netflix.
