CIA Lawyer Owen Hendricks Has a New Mission! All About Netflix's “The Recruit” Season 2, Starring Noah Centineo
From new cast members to the release date, here’s what we know so far about 'The Recruit' season 2
Season 2 of The Recruit is almost here.
Starring Noah Centineo as rookie CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks, The Recruit is a high-thrill spy series that is inspired by the experiences of one of its executive producers, former CIA Lawyer and journalist Adam Ciralsky. Premiering on Netflix in 2022, season 1 of The Recruit introduced Owen who, shortly after starting his job at the CIA, finds a letter from a mysterious convict threatening to spill agency secrets if not released from prison.
The convict, Max Meladze (Laura Haddock), swiftly proves to be an asset for Owen because she has the knowledge to tackle a looming national security threat. While Owen and Max’s relationship evolves from political to personal, their joint mission becomes more complicated as malicious parties target the pair.
At the time of its season 1 release, The Recruit soared to Netflix’s most-streamed chart of the week and a second season was announced only a month later.
With its release date soon approaching, here’s everything to know about The Recruit season 2, from the cast to its plot and release date.
How did season 1 of The Recruit end?
While The Recruit’s season 1 finale tied up many mysteries, the episode ended on a massive cliffhanger that points to what will likely be explored in season 2.
In the final scene of season 1, Owen wakes up in a dark room, bound to a chair after being kidnapped. He then turns to find Max tied to a chair beside him. As the two try to piece things together, a mysterious woman walks into the room holding a gun.
Max immediately seems to recognize her and says the name of her long-lost daughter, Karolina. But before she can say anything else, Karolina shoots Max. She then turns to a shocked Owen and asks, “Who are you? And what the f--- are you doing running around with my mother?” before the episode abruptly ends.
What is season 2 of The Recruit about?
Season 2 of The Recruit is set to pick up right where season 1 ended and throws Owen into another life-threatening mission in South Korea.
While it’s unclear what exactly Owen will be getting up to, beyond the season's description of focusing on a spy trade in South Korea, Centineo and The Recruit’s creator, Alexi Hawley, have promised even more thrilling hijinks in season 2.
“Owen’s headspace is complete chaos,” Centineo told Tudum in a 2024 interview while explaining where season 2 kicks off. “He has just witnessed Max ... get shot by her daughter Nichka [Karolina’s alias]. Owen is wondering how in the hell he is going to survive the next few seconds of his life.”
“This show lives in propulsion,” Hawley added. “So we immediately throw Owen in the deep end, which is where he’s the most fun. It seemed like a great way to start Season 2 — and then we just never let our foot off the gas."
Who is in The Recruit season 2 cast?
While a slew of season 1’s cast will be returning for the second season, The Recruit is notably introducing a new series regular: BAFTA nominee Teo Yoo.
After rising to critical acclaim for his role in Celine Song’s Oscar-nominated film Past Lives, Yoo is playing South Korean intelligence agent Jang Kyun opposite Centineo’s Owen. “Rhythm and chemistry are tough phenomena to have control over,” the To All the Boys I've Loved Before star told Tudum. “But thankfully, I was very fortunate to have a partner in Teo for Season 2.”
“He is such a strong antagonist and is extremely propulsive. Our Season 2 story arc is totally dominated by his performances and intensity,” Centineo added. “We became friends quickly, and our work was always a collaborative and fulfilling process."
As season 2 of The Recruit tackles a spy trade in South Korea, Yoo’s character will jump into a mission of his own with some hefty sacrifices. “It’s a tricky role because it’s not a buddy comedy between Owen and Jang Kyun,” Hawley explained to Tudum. “Owen and Jang Kyun have great energy together. There’s a push and a pull which is just sort of organic to them.”
Young-Ah Kim and Felix Solis are also joining the cast as a Korean intelligence officer and a United States diplomat, respectively.
Nathan Fillion is set to reprise his much-loved role as CIA Director Alton West in the new season, alongside returning cast members Vondie Curtis-Hall, Aarti Mann and Colton Dunn.
When does season 2 of The Recruit come out?
Season 2 of The Recruit premieres Jan. 30 on Netflix. Unlike season 1, which had eight episodes, the new season will only be comprised of six.
While Netflix has yet to release a trailer for the second season, the streaming service has dropped first-look images, including stills of Owen’s new mission in South Korea alongside Jang Kyun.
