Christina Aguilera shares what her kids borrow from her closet

Christina Aguilera's closet at home isn't off-limits.

The "Genie in a Bottle" singer and mom of two tells PEOPLE exclusively that her teenage son Max, 16, and preteen daughter Summer, 10, are allowed to borrow her pieces whenever they like.

"It’s fun to see how they wear things in different ways than I do, and reinterpret my fashion choices in ways that make it their own," the Grammy winner, 43, tells PEOPLE.

Aguilera's children definitely take after her cool fashion choices. On Nov. 19, she gave fans a glimpse at her kids' personal styles with a family photo shared to Instagram showing Max rocking a grungy graphic T-shirt, camo cargo pants, a hat and sunglasses, and Summer in a laid-back black outfit with high-top sneakers.

The pop star says Max usually gravitates toward her chain accessories and Chrome Hearts pieces. On the other hand, Summer loves to wear her shoes, but Aguilera admits that she thinks her mini-me "will definitely outgrow" her, so she's not sure how long that'll last.

"They both have good personal style and know exactly who they are. I’ve always raised them to express their uniqueness," she adds.

Great fashion advice and covetable clothing items aren't the only things Aguilera is passing down to her kids.

“Defining beauty for me is about feeling comfortable in your own skin, and that’s a message I always try to encourage my kids to instill in themselves,” she tells PEOPLE. “No one else can define what beauty means to you. Expressing myself creatively brings me joy and that comes from various styles and looks," she says.

She not only reminds herself of this onstage, but she tries to live authentically in her daily life too.

Aguilera was recently joined by Summer at the reopening of H&M's Times Square flagship store in N.Y.C.

Looking festive and party-ready, the singer did the honors of cutting the ribbon dressed in a pair of gold hot pants from the brand's holiday collection. Her daughter wore a baggy sweatshirt, jeans and sneakers.

Although she leaned into her glam style at the Nov. 21 event, Aguilera says she can't wait to celebrate her cozy family style tradition with Christmas less than a month away. "Cozy Christmas pajamas are a big thing for us! That includes fun onesies and socks," she revealed.
