Cheryl Hines Was in 'Good Spirits' at Emmys Party Days Before RFK Jr.'s Alleged Relationship Broke (Source)
Hines attended an Emmys afterparty days before news broke that her husband had allegedly been involved in "a personal relationship" with a reporter
Cheryl Hines was out at the 2024 Emmy Awards days before news broke of her husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s alleged affair with a reporter.
Less than one week before New York Magazine said that Washington correspondent Olivia Nuzzi was put “on leave” for having a “personal relationship” with who is presumed to be Kennedy, per CNN, his wife, Hines, was seen out enjoying herself following the 2024 Emmy Awards, an onlooker tells PEOPLE.
“She was in good spirits sitting with Jeff Garlin at the Curb Your Enthusiasm table” at the HBO/Max Primetime Emmy Awards Afterparty held at the San Vicente Bungalows on Sunday, Sept. 15, according to the source.
On Thursday, Sept. 19, a spokesperson for the publication released a statement saying that Nuzzi, 31, recently “acknowledged to the magazine’s editors” that she engaged in the relationship “while she was reporting on the campaign,” which was “a violation of the magazine’s standards around conflicts of interest and disclosures."
"Had the magazine been aware of this relationship, she would not have continued to cover the presidential campaign," the spokesperson added. “We regret this violation of our readers’ trust."

In a statement to PEOPLE, Nuzzi explained that “the nature of some communication” that occurred between herself and “a former reporting subject turned personal.” She added that she “did not directly report on the subject nor use them as a source” during the relationship.
"The relationship was never physical but should have been disclosed to prevent the appearance of a conflict,” she said. “I deeply regret not doing so immediately and apologize to those I’ve disappointed, especially my colleagues at New York."
While Nuzzi nor New York Magazine identified 70-year-old Kennedy as the other person involved, sources reportedly indicated to CNN that the politician was the person in question. Kennedy dropped out of the 2024 presidential race in August before endorsing former President Donald Trump.

PEOPLE reached out to Hines and Kennedy, who did not respond to a text and call seeking comment. However, a representative for the politician provided a statement to The Washington Post that Kennedy only met Nuzzi once for a November 2023 story, “The Mind-Bending Politics of RFK Jr.’s Spoiler Campaign.”
“Mr. Kennedy only met Olivia Nuzzi once in his life for an interview she requested, which yielded a hit piece,” the representative said, per the Washington Post.
