'Charlie's Angels' Stars Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu Reunite to Congratulate Demi Moore
Over 20 years since they co-starred in Charlie's Angels, Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu reunited to celebrate Demi Moore—who played the villain in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle—on her Academy Award-nominated performance in The Substance.
In a video interview for Vanity Fair, the four actresses got together (virtually) for the first time since Liu’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in 2019.
"We've done so many things other than Charlie's Angels," Barrymore said, kicking off the conversation.
"So whether you see us as the Angels or not, we are four women who love each other, respect each other, have known each other, have worked together, and celebrate female friendship and really what was an easy yes for all of us was to come together and talk to Demi and about Demi in this performance," she added.
"I think I can speak for all of us—we are so proud of you," Liu chimed in. "This performance, you've always had it in you and in all of the work that you've done. There's so much vulnerability in the strength that you are able to put on camera."
Diaz praised Moore for her bravery in the film.
"In watching you give this performance, you don't have to ask anybody's permission," she said.
"It's as if there was a constitution written in the film industry that laid out what the film industry was, and everybody has been abiding by it for the last however many decades," Diaz continued. "Y'all went in and just shredded it to pieces and said, 'I do not agree with this constitution. We are rewriting this. And not only that, but we're going to in the most audacious, violent, crazy way that you could possibly do it.'"

Barrymore took the opportunity to talk about Moore's break from Hollywood in the years leading up to The Substance, explaining that part of the reason why she "trusted" Moore's performance was because of her "personal strength."
"I was like, 'This badass has walked away at the height of success and taken time for herself.' It gave me something delicious that I've wished for—for every human being, let alone woman—which is that I can live without your acceptance," the Wedding Singer star said. "Seeing your performance in this, it could go so much further because I knew that you had your own personal wherewithal to not ask for the outside world's approval throughout your entire life."
Moore earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her performance in The Substance, which was nominated for five Academy Awards in total (including Best Picture and Best Director).
