Shannen was first diagnosed with cancer in 2015 and underwent eight rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, as well as a single mastectomy before entering remission in 2017. Sadly, she announced in February 2020 that her cancer had returned the previous year and she was now stage four.

Shannen had a series of small roles in the TV series Little House on the Prairie and films Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Heathers before landing her breakout role as Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210.

She left the show at the end of season four in 1994 and returned to TV in 1998 as Prue Halliwell in Charmed, a role she held until her departure in 2001 following three seasons.

Shannen later produced and starred in her own reality show, Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty, and reprised her role as Brenda Walsh in the Beverly Hills, 90210 spin-off titled 90210 in 2008. She also returned for the short-lived follow-up series BH90210 in 2019 and is set to star in two yet-to-be-released films How to Make a Deal with the Devil and Bukowski.

Shannen’s former co-stars and friends have taken to social media to mourn her death, including Jason Priestly who played her twin brother Brandon Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210.

“Shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of my friend Shannen. She was a force of nature and I will miss her. Sending love and light to her family in this dark time,” he shared.

Carol Potter, who played her mother Cindy Walsh in the hit series, added: “What a journey she has been on! Gone too soon. Throughout, she stayed true to herself and gave us an example of courage and perseverance in facing her own death. May she rest in peace.”

“Shan. My sister. You loved me through everything. You were a big part of my understanding of love. I'll miss you more than I know how to process right now. Thank you for the gift of you,” Brian Austin Green, who played David Silver, wrote on his Instagram Story.

Gabrielle Carteris, who starred as Andrea Zuckerman, also said she hopes Shannen is reunited with actor Luke Perry - who played Brenda’s love interest Dylan McKay and died in 2019 at age 52.

“So young - so sad. May you RIP Shannon [sic]. I know Luke is there with open arms to love you,” she posted on Instagram.
