Beverly Hills, 90210 star Shannen Doherty dies aged 53: 'Shocked and saddened'
The beloved actress was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015.
Tributes are flowing following the death of beloved actress Shannen Doherty at the age of 53 after a nine-year battle with breast cancer. The Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed star’s publicist Leslie Sloane shared the news in a statement to PEOPLE on Sunday night (Australian time).
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,” Leslie told the publication.
“The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”

Shannen was first diagnosed with cancer in 2015 and underwent eight rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, as well as a single mastectomy before entering remission in 2017. Sadly, she announced in February 2020 that her cancer had returned the previous year and she was now stage four.
The actress revealed in June 2023 that her terminal breast cancer had spread to her brain and she was undergoing brain surgery, telling her followers that she was “trying to be brave” but felt “petrified”.
Shannen's Hollywood career
Shannen had a series of small roles in the TV series Little House on the Prairie and films Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Heathers before landing her breakout role as Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210.
She left the show at the end of season four in 1994 and returned to TV in 1998 as Prue Halliwell in Charmed, a role she held until her departure in 2001 following three seasons.
Shannen later produced and starred in her own reality show, Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty, and reprised her role as Brenda Walsh in the Beverly Hills, 90210 spin-off titled 90210 in 2008. She also returned for the short-lived follow-up series BH90210 in 2019 and is set to star in two yet-to-be-released films How to Make a Deal with the Devil and Bukowski.

Shannen’s former co-stars and friends have taken to social media to mourn her death, including Jason Priestly who played her twin brother Brandon Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210.
“Shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of my friend Shannen. She was a force of nature and I will miss her. Sending love and light to her family in this dark time,” he shared.
Carol Potter, who played her mother Cindy Walsh in the hit series, added: “What a journey she has been on! Gone too soon. Throughout, she stayed true to herself and gave us an example of courage and perseverance in facing her own death. May she rest in peace.”
“Shan. My sister. You loved me through everything. You were a big part of my understanding of love. I'll miss you more than I know how to process right now. Thank you for the gift of you,” Brian Austin Green, who played David Silver, wrote on his Instagram Story.
Gabrielle Carteris, who starred as Andrea Zuckerman, also said she hopes Shannen is reunited with actor Luke Perry - who played Brenda’s love interest Dylan McKay and died in 2019 at age 52.
“So young - so sad. May you RIP Shannon [sic]. I know Luke is there with open arms to love you,” she posted on Instagram.
Rose McGowan, who played Shannen’s half-sister Paige Matthews on Charmed, also shared a lengthy tribute on social media calling her a “force of energy” that would live forever.
“Shannen Doherty had the heart of a lion. Passion for craft is often mislabeled as trouble. Shannen was passion. I met her in the 90s and was awed. Getting to really know her later in life, a beautiful gift. This woman fought to live. ,” she penned. “Shannen knew how to be a star because she was one since childhood. Her work ethic inspiring to the end.
“Rest now warrior, we will never forget you dear sister.”
