Ariana Grande's Chunky Golden Globes Highlights Were Inspired by Another Hollywood Icon
Grande's colorist, Rachel Bodt, tells 'InStyle' how she achieved the honey-blonde hue.
Ariana Grande has been dressing with her Wicked character, Glinda, in mind throughout the viral press tour, but it seems the star has also been holding space for other popular culture references. At the 2025 Golden Globes on Sunday, Grande traded her bright Glinda hair color for a deeper hue with chunky highlights. Her colorist Rachel Bodt shares that the look was inspired by Audrey Hepburn.
"We went for a warm, light auburn-brown base with chunky contoured highlights to create contrast," Bodt tells InStyle. "I kept both the highlights and base colors warm so they played well with each other. Since it was a bolder look, I wanted it to feel like it went together."
Hepburn was known for adding thick blonde highlights to her caramel hair, perhaps, most famously in her role as Holly Golightly in the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany's. Bodt explains that she used foils on Grande to achieve the bold blonde streaks while keeping the base "lighter and warmer" for dimension. She placed the highlights strategically, but not perfectly symmetrical, to add interest. "[I'm] calling it contouring, as we wanted to bring attention to the lightness as well as the depth," says Bodt.
It seems even Grande's updo was a nod to Hepburn. To complement the 1966 strapless column dress—which also featured an ornate beaded band at the top—Grande wore her hair in Hepburn's signature bouncy pony-tail with sweeping micro-bangs. She finished off her glam with fringe eyelashes, floating brown liner above the crease of her eyelid, and a soft pink lip, perfected by her makeup artist Michael Anthony.
It wasn't just her hair that was a nod to the movie star, however. Grande's vintage butter-yellow Givenchy dress (a subtle nod to the Wizard of Oz's yellow-brick road) mimicked Hepburn's look in the 1957 film Love in the Afternoon by pairing the archival piece with long white opera gloves, a diamond choker, a matching drop earrings, styled by Mimi Cuttrell.
Grande shared a roundup of photos from the evening, showing off the look, while also giving her Wicked co-stars a sweet shoutout. "⋆。˚⋆🫧 ♡ @goldenglobes in 1966 @givenchy ♡ 🫧," she wrote. "i am so deeply proud of our Wicked family ! and so profoundly grateful to have included in this historic and beautiful celebration of incredible art. thank you so so much for having me. 🫧 ˚"
