The $1.40 Aldi product panned by the experts

Aldi is known, more often than not, to come out ahead of its competitors when it comes to their products, but this time Choice has placed them at the bottom of the group for one item.

Choice has conducted a deep dive into which store-bought strawberry jam tastes best with the website writing: "Strawberry jam, at its most basic, is just two ingredients – strawberries and sugar. But a good quality strawberry jam can elevate the humblest of scones.

"It's a popular ingredient choice for Victoria sponge, jam roly poly and jam drop biscuits. And spread on a slice of hot, buttered toast? It's the simplest of pleasures."

They reviewed 16 different strawberry jams from brands including Aldi, Bonne Maman, Coles, Cottee's and Woolworths.

Home economist Fiona Mair, Choice’s senior media adviser and strawberry jam lover Johnathan Brown and food writer Rachel Clemons tasted the strawberry jam samples 'blind', without knowing the brands.

Coming in at number one was Beerenberg Australia Strawberry Jam, which was "one of the more expensive products" in the review.

The testers said: "Glossy, natural colour. Beautiful, strawberry/lemon aroma. Sweet strawberry flavour with some acidity. Lots of seeds."

The lowest ranking jam was Aldi's Grandessa Strawberry Conserve with Choice writing: "Our judges weren’t too fond of Aldi’s Grandessa Strawberry Conserve, which came in at last place."

"The texture of this jam was quite grainy, and it had quite an artificial smell and flavour."

But it's not all bad news for Aldi with their Grandessa Signature Strawberry Premium Jam landing them in second place.

It was described as, "rich, deep red colour. Light, pleasant strawberry aroma. Thick and chunky jam with evident fruit lumps. Can picture this on a great scone."

And in equal second place was the Woolworths Essentials Strawberry Jam, which the testers also seemed to enjoy quite a lot.

They said, "Dark strawberry colour. Pleasant, subtle, sweet strawberry fragrance. Good balance of sweet and acid. Nice strawberry chunks, which are the stars of this jam."

Next on the list were Bonne Maman Strawberry Conserve, IXL Strawberry Jam and Rose's Strawberry Conserve.
