Alarming detail in baby's book divides opinion: 'I’m appalled’
Would you be concerned if this happened to you?
A mum has spoken out after realising one of her baby’s books has a controversial food item pictured. Taking to Reddit, she shared a few snaps of the book, showing other users a picture of beer.
While some users pointed out that it could be root beer or another drink on the cover, the item is clearly labelled as “Beer” on the inside page.
“My baby’s food book has a photo of beer in it,” the mum wrote in the caption. The colourful book shows different food items with cartoon faces drawn on top.
The “Beer” character sits next to “Pizza”, with a cute cartoon version of “Bread” popping out of a toaster on the next page.
It didn’t take long for Reddit users to start arguing in the comment section, with some pointing out how strange it was to include beer in a baby book.
“It’s obviously a dumb design choice to teach the baby about a food they’re not allowed to try. Probably cheap books made with no thought given to it,” one person wrote.

“I was like ‘that’s probably just soda’ until I [saw] it literally says beer lol. I’m appalled,” another added.
“I personally think it should be changed. It’s not like [she’s] not gonna explain to their kid what beer is and shelter them from alcohol. It’s moreso the fact that this book could’ve chosen any other food or drink, something that kids will be eating and drinking, but the author decided to [use] a picture of beer. It’s weird to me too,” a third remarked.
“Yep. That’s weird. I wouldn’t really call beer ‘food’ either. I don’t think it’s bad for teaching children about alcohol, but pizza and beer aren’t the best examples of food out there,” a fourth said.
“I mean out of all the drinks they could have chosen, why would they choose beer for a children’s book,” another chimed in.
Reddit users defend baby book
However, the majority of comments came from people who didn’t see any problem with the baby book.
“If you’re that touchy about it say it’s juice, I’m sure your baby can’t read yet. Not that they will know what beer is for a long time,” one person suggested.
“Meh. It’s kinda like a easter egg for sleep-deprived adults to laugh at while doing baby stuff all day, every day for month. So personally, I would laugh, but I understand some people think alcohol is a sin and would be upset they bought the sinful book,” another pondered.

“Somehow I don’t think a child of that age that will appreciate these books is going to be convinced to sneak into mummy’s beer stash because they saw a picture in your book. Do you have any alcohol in your house? Does your child see you consuming it?” a third asked.
“Your baby will see beer in public if you bring them to a grocery store [or] to a restaurant. Why are we so obsessed with hiding things from children that they are going to see anyway,” another remarked.
