Al Roker Fans Are 'So Excited' About His Major Career Switch Up

As many fans get encouragement and joy from seeing Al Roker on Today delivering the weather report and other news, the 70-year-old will soon bring joy and learning to a broader and younger audience with an animated series.

Roker revealed on Jan. 22 that a new animated show called Weather Hunters from Al Roker Entertainment, his production company, will premiere this summer starring Roker, Sheryl Lee Ralph, LeVar Burton and more.

The Today star shared the exciting news with his fans on Instagram, writing of the show, "The kids in your life will love it—and maybe even learn a thing or two about a topic near and dear to me: WEATHER!"

Fans were hyped for the new show, with replies like, "So excited about this show!! 🎉," "So cuuuuuute!!!" and "This is amazing! Can’t wait to share it with my grandkids!"

Another wrote, "Wow! This is wonderful!!! I will watch this with our grandkids…and alone.❤️Congrats!!"

A new press release from PBS KIDS shared that the show will premiere on July 7, 2025, in English and Spanish. Weather Hunters, targeted for kids ages 5 to 8, is "designed to support kids’ learning about Earth science and meteorology through adventure and comedy."

The series hopes to "cultivate their awareness, curiosity, and caring about how weather and climate impact individuals, communities and our global society."

Tandi Fomukong voices the main character, Lily Hunter, described as "an intrepid and observant 8-year-old weather detective who shares her investigations with her family and friends."

Her family includes her father, Al Hunter, played by Roker, as well as mom Dot (Holly Robinson Peete), sister Corky (Kapri Ladd) and brother Benny (Lorenzo Ross). Ralph voices their neighbor, Ms. Joyce, while Burton voices Al’s grandfather, Wallace Reed Hunter.

"Weather has always been a passion of mine, and inspiring young minds to explore its wonders has been one of the most fulfilling parts of this journey," said Roker of the venture, adding, "I’m thrilled to share that passion with a new generation, including my granddaughter, Sky, who reminds me every day of the importance of leaving a better planet for our kids.”
