Why Sarah Jessica Parker's Initial Reaction to the “Sex and the City” Pilot Left Costar Kristin Davis Worried

On her 'Are You a Charlotte?' podcast, Davis speculated that Parker may have been "nervous" about committing to an ongoing series back in 1997

Kristin Davis says that way back in 1997, she briefly worried that Sarah Jessica Parker wasn’t as enthusiastic as she was about Sex and the City getting picked up for a full first season.

On the most recent episode of her new rewatch podcast, Are You a Charlotte?, Davis looked back on the period after she and the rest of the show’s cast filmed Sex and the City’s pilot, while they were all waiting to hear whether HBO would commit to making the series.

“They had 18 months to decide, something like that,” Davis explained. “Maybe just a year. Whatever it was felt like eternity, and I would call my poor manager, Dave, every day and be like, ‘Did you hear anything? Did you hear anything?’ ”

During this time, Davis said she was living in Los Angeles, where she ran into Parker one day.

“I said, ‘Did you hear anything?’ And she was like, ‘No,’ ” Davis recalled, adding that Parker “didn’t seem as anxious about it as I was.”

“And I said, ‘Well, don't you want it to be picked up?’ And she said something like, ‘Yeah,’ ” Davis continued. “But I could tell she was just trying to please me. You know what I mean?”

“I thought, ‘Oh, no. Sarah Jessica doesn't want to do it,’ ” she recalled.

In hindsight, however, Davis chalks that impression up to Parker’s “reticence to being committed to a show.”

“We did have these massive seven-year-long contracts, which is the norm for any kind of pilot,” she explained. “So, for her, she'd been kind of just this, you know, journeyman actress in a way, like, doing Broadway, you know, doing movies like, Honeymoon in Vegas.”

“I believe her nervousness was, ‘Do I really wanna be committed? Do I wanna be tied down?’ ” Davis speculated. “It wasn't something that most actors like — you didn't start to be an actor because you wanted to do one job for 30 years.”

Of course, the beloved series did get picked up and ran for six seasons, earning Parker six Emmy nominations, including one win, for her role as Carrie Bradshaw. Two movies and a reboot — Max’s And Just Like That — later, Davis said that what may have initially seemed like a daunting commitment turned into an “incredible opportunity” that none of the cast members could have envisioned back then.

“It just feels really lovely,” Parker said of And Just Like That’s third season, which wrapped filming last October, during an appearance on Today with Hoda & Jenna last spring.

The new season is expected to premiere on Max later this year.
