Why 'Dancing with the Stars' Host Alfonso Ribeiro Is in a Wheelchair

It will be interesting to see if when Dancing with the Stars returns on Tuesday night to celebrate its 500th episode, host Alfonso Ribeiro will show up with a cast on his ankle.

According to TMZ, the host was filming an ABC holiday special at Disney World in Orlando, Fla., this weekend when he stepped on one of the trolley rails and rolled his ankle.

Ribeiro stumbled and couldn’t put any weight on the ankle, so he was using his DWTS co-host Julianne Hough for support until the production staff was able to get him seated in a chair.

TMZ has video footage of the mishap.

But there’s more to the story, apparently the pain was so acute that Ribeiro vomited into a trashcan on the side of the street. Luckily for him, Disney World’s facilities are famous for their cleanliness, so there are no shortage of trashcans in the park.

Eventually, Riberio was transferred from the chair to a wheelchair so he could be mobile, and the report is that the ankle injury isn’t serious and he was able to finish filming.

Disney Parks’ Magical Christmas Day Parade, which will air on Dec. 25 at 10 a.m. on ABC, was filming at Disney World this weekend, so it’s most likely that that is the special Ribeiro was there participating in. Hough hosted the Christmas special, which features parade floats and performances of classic holiday songs, along with her brother Derek Hough last year.

The 500th episode of DWTS will feature the six remaining stars: Joey Graziadei, Danny Amendola, Chandler Kinney, Ilona Maher, Stephen Nedoroscik and Dwight Howard.

Dancing with the Stars airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT and simulcast on Disney+, streams next day on Hulu.
