As far as I’m concerned, the enemies-to-lovers pop culture trope can take a back seat in favor of the far more elite coworkers-to-lovers trope. Case in point: Margot Robbie and her husband, Tom Ackerley.
For over a decade, these two have proved that couples who work together can be successful in and out of the office, er, movie studio. They met in 2013 while shooting Suite Française—Margot was starring in the film, and Tom was working as an assistant director, per People. From there, their relationship as coworkers and friends blossomed, and they began dating in 2014, the outlet reported. Two years later, they tied the knot, and now, Margot is pregnant with the couple's first child.
While Margot and Tom have been rather private throughout most of their relationship, they’ve been out and about recently—and haven’t shied away from packing on the PDA. Here’s everything to know about what their body language reveals about their relationship, according to an expert.

Margot likes staying connected to Tom.
One of Margot and Tom's first public appearances was at a New York Rangers hockey game in 2014. In this pic, Tom is clapping while Margot has a lifting hold on his elbow. It's as if she's saying, "I'm not going to keep you from clapping, but I just want to stay connected to you," says Patti Wood, a body language expert with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Body Language and Nonverbal Communication based in Atlanta, Georgia.
Pay attention to the center of Margot's chest, where her "heart window" is, as Wood calls it. FYI: There are different windows on the front of your body, which you can close if your hands are in front of them and open if your hands are to the sides, according to Wood. Margot's heart window is directed towards Tom, and she has a big smile on her face. This signifies that she wants to share the joy of this lighthearted moment with him, and she's making an effort to be physically connected with him.
They can block out the noise and be in the moment together.
In 2018, Margot and Tom had an adorable moment on the Vanity Fair Oscars Party red carpet. The camera captured Margot smiling at Tom while bending over towards him, from her head, to her torso, to her knees. Her body language shows how into this moment she is with Tom, and how she wants to share her childlike joy with him, Wood says.
While Tom is leaning away a bit from Margot, he's still into this moment with her. You can tell because the feet are the most honest part of the body—after all, they're under the least amount of conscious control while you're moving, Wood says—and his right one is pointing at and touching hers. "He wants to be connected," she adds.
And if you look at their faces? Well, their heads are turned directly toward one another, signifying that they're focused on each other and are blocking out the rest of the noise that comes with a red carpet appearance. "That always bodes well for any kind of famous couple," Wood says.
Tom gives Margot space to shine on her own.
Summer 2023 was a catalogue of Barbie red carpets for Margot and Tom. At the world premiere, they posed together with their feet pointing towards one another. "Couples who love each other will just automatically orient their feet towards each other," Wood says.
Tom's pelvis is also pointing towards Margot, which represents that they have a sexual connection, Wood says. Plus, the way his shoulders tilt down and his heart is directed toward her nods to their emotional connection.
Still, Tom is a bit shyer with his body language, as there's a gap in between them, and they're not touching anywhere other than their arms. Sometimes, when a celeb couple attends a red carpet event honoring one of the partners, "the other one might give them a little bit more space" so they can shine on their own, Wood says. That's what Tom is doing here. Still, the way Margot's head and upper chest tilt toward him is her way of saying, "I want everybody to know I'm with him," per Wood.
Tom is protective of Margot and their future baby.
Margot hard-launched her baby bump at Wimbledon 2024 with Tom. Pictured here, in a conversation with friends, Tom is gently touching the actress' stomach. Wood says that when couples do this, it's clear they're comfortable in public together.
Additionally, Tom's knee is close to and pointing towards Margot's legs, and his arm is around her. All of these gestures signify Tom's "protection" of her, because his hand is over her belly and the fingers are laced together, Wood says.
Their sexual chemistry is playful.
BTW, Margot and Tom certainly weren't shy about having a playful PDA moment at Wimbledon. In this photo, Margot licks Tom's nose, showing they have "a playful sexual chemistry," Wood says. And that energy is returned: Tom makes an effort to be close to Margot, with his hand on her thigh. Plus, he's leaning into her with his neck stretched out, as if to say "I'm into you," Wood adds.
Also worth mentioning: The couple's bodies, but specifically their arms, are overlapping, which "is a sign that they want to be connected," Wood says.
Clearly, Tom knows it's Margot's (Barbie's) world—and he loves living in it.
