After some brief references, The Way Home unexpectedly introduced an important part of Elliot’s history in this Friday’s episode: his ex-wife Emma.

Elliot’s former spouse showed up unannounced and caught his current girlfriend Kat off guard with her arrival. There was definitely some awkwardness and jealousy on Kat’s part as Elliot invited Emma, a violinist, to stay for dinner. It’s been five years since the exes last saw each other, but they certainly seemed to be on good terms as they reminisced about how they first met when Elliot was teaching at a private school and about how it took him forever to propose. Elliot replied that Kat is all too familiar with how slow he can be on the romantic uptake.
Elliot later revealed to Kat that the night that he proposed to Emma in a Toronto restaurant, he saw Kat with Brady and took it as a sign that he had to move on. But his two-year marriage to Emma was futile because he always loved Kat. That night, however, wasn’t a happy one for Kat: It was the beginning of the end of her own marriage, she confessed to Elliot. If she’d known he was there, she would have run into his arms and never let go.
But how true is that statement in this moment? Because after Kat discovered an old folk song about lost love from the days of Port Haven’s founding that is clearly about her and Thomas, she couldn’t stop thoughts of him from getting into her head. She even had a very sexy dream about the rum smuggler!
Her recent trip to the past reminded her of “how good it feels to come home to you and what we have,” she told Elliot. “People can write songs about it, right?” But it sort of sounded like she was trying to convince herself.
At Del’s birthday party, another folk song was unearthed, this one about a witch dying in 1816. After learning that that was the year of no sun because of a volcano eruption, Kat became convinced that Susanna was in danger. So she and Jacob jumped into the pond and resurfaced in an eerily empty Port Haven to witness Susanna marrying… Cyrus Goodwin! (Well, that explains why Teen Evelyn and Alice found Susanna’s painting of Katherine stashed in the Lingermore attic.)
And who else was watching in the shadows? Thomas!
A few more important twists and revelations from the episode to chew on:
— Del shared a vague but intriguing tidbit with Sam about why she hates her birthday: Back in the day, she left Port Haven on her birthday and went back home, but everything had changed. It was brutal and so lonely, and she made a selfish choice that left other people no choice at all, she confessed. Hmm… And Del’s really going to hate her birthday now after the awful fight she had with Alice when her granddaughter brought up that there’s another, overlooked side to Del and Colton’s love story, and that’s Evelyn’s hurt feelings. Del didn’t take too kindly to the comment, exclaiming to Alice to stay out of her memories and that she will not be made to feel guilty about what she and Colton had.
— Kat discovered that all of Casey’s references were fake. Meanwhile, Max Goodwin continued to insist that someone had lied to Alice, but they did their research: Casey is short for the family name Cassandra, a factoid that Evelyn also mentioned to Alice in 1974. Hmm… again.
— Noah and Alice made their relationship boyfriend and girlfriend official, after which he told Alice that Max encouraged him to lock her down. Apparently, Max thinks Alice is wife material. Hmm… x infinity.
— Evelyn, Alice, Colton and Del tried to contact the ghost of Evelyn’s ancestor, who was reportedly kept locked up in the attic by her husband. Evelyn dubbed her Cassandra, but the spirit that they summoned did not appear to be her. Whoever it was used the Ouija board to send a ominous message about “fire” and “blame.”
— While in town for Del’s birthday, Brady expressed concern about the fact that Alice isn’t living with Kat. His ex-wife reassured him that she will always be there for Alice, and that this move-in with Elliot will be temporary (the last part of which her current beau overheard).
— In a surprisingly touching moment, Brady apologized to Jacob for what happened to him as a kid and for distracting Kat at the carnival. Jacob told Brady that he didn’t blame him at all.
— After being legally resurrected, Jacob accepted Lewis’ offer to work for the terribly-named Goodwin’s Good Wines.
