Watch Drew Barrymore Badly Serenade a Cringing Orlando Bloom in MSC Cruises' 2025 Super Bowl Ad (Exclusive)

Orlando Bloom and Drew Barrymore met for the first time when filming the cruise line's Super Bowl commercial

Longtime Hollywood fixtures Drew Barrymore and Orlando Bloom had never crossed paths — until now.

The talk show host and the Lord of the Rings alum shared a stage — or boat — for the first time while filming MSC Cruises Super Bowl 2025 ad.

The pair tapped into some cultural differences in the spot, which focuses on the blend of American and European styles, according to a press release. “There's a sort of American and European sense of humor to the banter between us that I think has a certain charm to it, while highlighting those aspects of what MSC World America offers, which is a bit of an American flair and a European style, which is cool,” Bloom told PEOPLE.

A 15-second teaser for the commercial, which will air in its entirety during Super Bowl XIV on Sunday, Feb. 9, shows some of that banter. In the clip, which was shared on Thursday, Jan. 23, Barrymore hits the keys of a piano and sings, particularly off-key, part of Madonna’s “Holiday.”

“Was that good?” she asks a wincing Bloom who is leaning on the piano. “Not great,” he replies.

“Yeah, fair,” she responds, continuing to play the piano.

The message, “The holiday begins 02.09.25” flashes on the screen as Madonna’s song plays. The commercial goes back to a singing Barrymore, who is smiling and belting while Bloom watches on. This commercial marks the brand's (and Bloom’s!) first Big Game ad.

Despite meeting at sea for the commercial shoot, the E.T. actress told PEOPLE about how they connected before going aboard.

“I had never met Orlando. If we were in the same room together, we might've passed by each other, but we really didn't know each other. So I was so delighted when I found out he wanted to pregame and get to know each other beforehand, because I was like, ‘Oh, good, I'm working with someone who cares and who's personal,’” Barrymore explained, adding that the pair spoke on the phone for an hour about how they wanted to take on the script.

“He's just a really nice guy and he cares,” she continued. “And it's nice because when somebody cares, it doesn't make you feel weird for caring.”

When they got in front of the camera the shoot became more fun as it went on, which is a rare but pleasant surprise, according to Barrymore: “We had a lot to tackle in the two days we shot, and it was great. It got more fun as we went along.”

Bloom emphasized how enjoyable the new friendship was. “She's just a ton of fun,” he told PEOPLE of the “incredibly thoughtful and engaging” Charlie’s Angels star. “She's super kind. She's very funny and charming.”

The opportunity was an easy “yes” for the travel-loving Bloom, he explained. “It emphasizes what a fun time you can have as a family on a vacation like at MSC Cruises,” Bloom said.

Barrymore, who considers herself “obsessed with travel,” reiterated the point that the cruise line is “for all the people who don't know where and how to plan, it's all taken care of.”
