Watch Ariana Grande Stop Cynthia Erivo's Fall at the 2025 Golden Globes
She had her back.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s onscreen friendship has blossomed into a real-life relationship away from the set of Wicked, thanks to coordinating style moments on the press circuit, their sweet red carpet exchanges, and of course, the “holding space” fingernail hold that went viral. Unsurprisingly, the co-stars were inseparable once again as they stepped out at the 2025 Golden Globes in Wicked-coded dresses on Sunday, January 5. In between mingling with stars like Miley Cyrus and Kate Winslet, Grande showed she had Erivo’s back—quite literally—as she helped save her from a Jennifer Lawrence-esque awards show fall.
It was a big night for the cast of Wicked, as the Jon M. Chu-directed film was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy as well as Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Grande and Erivo were also individually recognized for their portrayals of Glinda and Elphaba, with Erivo getting a nod for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, while the “7 Rings” singer was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.
When Wicked’s single win of the night, for Best Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement, which is the Golden Globes’ newest category, was announced by Vin Diesel, the entire cast headed over the stage to accept the honor.
Erivo and Grande could be seen holding hands as they walked up the steps to the podium–and the “Into You” singer was luckily able to prevent her co-star from tripping in front of the entire crowd. In footage from the evening, Erivo seemingly tripped over her full ball gown as she made her way to the top of the steps, but Grande was able to help steady her and prevent a fall.
In addition to physically supporting each other, the pair have spoken about their close friendship and how they’ve emotionally been there for each other. In an interview with Elle UK, Erivo opened up about how the pair was able to cultivate a real-life friendship that joins them as “friends and sisters," revealing that they "sit on FaceTime for hours."
“We are also really protective of each other. It’s real. Take it or leave it,” she told the publication.
