'The Voice' winner Jason 'Sundance' Head on shooting: 'I was sure that I was going to die'
Jason "Sundance" Head, who won Season 11 of NBC's "The Voice," is speaking out after being hospitalized for a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
In a series of videos posted to his Facebook, the singer-songwriter gave fans a blow-by-blow of the harrowing incident.
Head accidentally shot himself in the stomach Friday and was airlifted to the UT Health Tyler hospital in Tyler, Texas, his reps confirmed Saturday. In an email statement shared with USA TODAY Tuesday, Head's agent Trey Newman revealed the bullet missed his vital organs and was lodged instead in a fatty tissue area of his stomach.
In the first video, posted Sunday, Head said, "I still have the bullet in me. I'm not sure exactly what's going to go on. All I know is I didn't die." He thanked God as well as the medical team and first responders who treated him before saying, "I was sure that I was going to die, it was one of the craziest things that's ever happened to me."
"I saw the light man and I really thought I was dying... I just prayed a lot and I felt super peaceful," Head said in an interview with ET Tuesday. "When the ambulance came, I was never so happy to be put on a stretcher in my life," he told the outlet.
“This is the first in detail I’m pretty much hearing." his wife Misty said in the interview. "He just got out of bed yesterday for a little bit and then again today because his stomach is really swollen.”
Sundance Head describes being shot
In a second video posted Monday night, Head painted a fuller picture. He described heading out for a solo camping trip, adding he always travels with a .22-caliber revolver. "It's an old-school one," he said of the gun, "It looks just like the kind of gun you'd see in a Western movie."
The gun was in a quick-draw holster, he said, with no strap. "I really don't know what happened still," he told the camera, saying he put his backpack with the holster in the passenger of his car and was shot when he began to walk away.
"It happened that fast," he said. "That revolver slid out of the case and it hit the doorjamb on the Jeep on the floorstep and it shot me."
Describing shock and disbelief, Head said he felt his stomach to confirm the wound. "I reached my hand in my pocket in my blue jeans to get my phone and my pockets were already full of blood," he shared.
Since no one was nearby, Head said he took off running, jumping a fence on the property to make it out to the highway for help. "I also want to thank the people that were on Highway 84 that stopped to help me. Without you I don't think I was going to make it, man, I was bleeding out," he said in the first video.
A few cars drove by before anyone stopped but eventually, a bystander slowed to offer help. "He was like an angel from heaven," Head said. "I was never so glad to see somebody in my life."
Head is now at home recovering and eager to get back on tour, Newman shared in the statement.
The country balladeer rose to reality TV fame after winning "The Voice" as a member of Blake Shelton's team. He wowed Shelton in his blind audition with a performance of Otis Redding's "I've Been Loving You Too Long."
Prior to his 2016 "Voice" win, Sundance Head was a contestant on Season 7 of Fox's "American Idol." Though Jordin Sparks ultimately won, he made it to the Top 16.
