“Voice” Alum Mary Sarah on How New Single 'Baby Mama' Tells Her Own Story: 'It Was Absolutely Heaven Sent' (Exclusive)

"This song gets me so emotional, even just putting it out right now," the country artist tells PEOPLE

The breathtaking song “Baby Mama” tells Mary Sarah’s story in many ways, but it’s a story she did not create.

“I am not a writer on this song,” Mary Sarah, 29, tells PEOPLE in a recent interview from Nashville. “This is why I know it was absolutely heaven sent.”

Because back in 2022, songwriters Nate Kenyon, Jesse Lee and Blake Bollinger unknowingly wrote the story of Mary Sarah and the complete U-turn her life had taken just two years before.

"Mitch [Clark] and I were together for about four months when we figured out we were pregnant," Mary Sarah remembers of what her and her singer-songwriter boyfriend's life looked like back in 2020, when she got the life-altering news she was pregnant with their now 3-year-old daughter Avalyn Mae. "It wasn't like this thing that was planned and super exciting. It was a shock to both of our families and to us. For me, I had mixed emotions. It was very bittersweet at that time."

And in 2022, as she struggled with the idea of writing a song about the roller coaster that is motherhood, The Voice Season 10 contestant discovered the unforgettable song "Baby Mama."

"As soon as they played the first verse for me, I looked at my producer [Bart Butler] and audibly heard God say to me, 'You did not have to write it because I was writing for you,'" she remembers. "It's just one of those songs that I've always felt has had such a bigger meaning to it. There are just some things in life where you just don't feel equipped for it. You're like, 'I need your help.'"

It's a song that still can hit Mary Sarah straight in the heart.

"This song gets me so emotional, even just putting it out right now," she says with a slight laugh. "Every day I’m crying because something new and beautiful is happening because of this song. It's been such a blessing, honestly, to hear everyone else's stories."

But now, it's her story that plays out in the music video for "Baby Mama," premiering exclusively on PEOPLE and featuring the adorableness of the little girl they like to call Avy Mae.

"She's determined, smart and so beautiful," Mary Sarah raves about her toddler. "I honestly feel like there are days where she's absolutely teaching me. I don't want to get in the way of her. I want her to be her and bloom. And she is. She brings so much light."

But Mary Sarah says she had no plan to have her daughter in the music video. But director Chrissy Yoder had other plans.

"There is this moment in the video where I see Avalyn get out of the car, and Chrissy just caught the moment," she says. "It’s almost overwhelming. I cannot believe that honestly, at a certain point in my life, what I thought might ruin my career is about to be the best thing I will ever be given. I have become a better person, a better artist, a better everything because of becoming a mom. I love who I am now."

The music video also features little moments of bliss from the past few years, including the precious time when she was expecting her baby girl.

"During COVID, nobody really saw me ever," Mary Sarah remembers. "No one got to see that part of my life. No one ever really got to see me pregnant. So, as an artist, I felt like I wanted to share that with everybody."

The video also reminds Mary Sarah just how in love she is with not only — Avalyn Mae, but also the man that has been by her side through it all.

"There's not a lot of words that I could really say to encompass how grateful I am and how big God is, because we were four months into a relationship. It was so early on, it really could have gone either way," she concludes. "But Mitch is literally the best dad I could have ever asked for and a beautiful human being. And his heart is so big. Every day, he is my rock."
