Variety Executive Editor Tatiana Siegel Writing Sweeping History of DC Film Franchise, With Crown Taking Worldwide Rights to Upcoming Book

Crown Publishing has acquired worldwide rights to an upcoming book by Tatiana Siegel, Variety’s executive editor of film and media, that covers the sweeping history of the DC film franchise. The book will offer a complete, behind-the-scenes story of one of the most storied, dramatic and successful superhero franchises in Hollywood history, from George Reeves to David Corenswet.

Crown editor Aubrey Martinson will shepherd the project for the publishing house, which has been behind best-sellers like Michelle Obama’s “Becoming” and Matthew McConaughey’s “Greenlights.”

Siegel is represented by Aevitas Creative Management’s Jon Michael Darga. She has extensively covered both the business of the DC and Marvel franchises, from drama on the set of the “Aquaman” sequel to a “Joker: Folie à Deux” post-mortem to a 2023 cover story on Marvel’s recent spiral.

Before joining Variety in 2023, Siegel worked as a senior writer for Rolling Stone and previously served as executive film editor at The Hollywood Reporter. She also had a five-year stint at Variety between 2007-2012.

The first film ever based on DC Comics was 1951’s “Superman and the Mole Men,” which starred George Reeves as the titular superhero and acted as a pilot for the “Adventures of Superman” TV series. Other notable releases included the 1966 “Batman,” starring Adam West; 1978’s “Superman” starring Christopher Reeve, which also had three sequels; and 1989’s “Batman,” starring Michael Keaton, which launched several sequels.

2005’s “Batman Begins” began a new, grittier era for the films, which, after two more Christopher Nolan-helmed sequels, began a new era called the DC Extended Universe. In 2025, a new “Superman” movie with David Corenswet is set to relaunch the DC Universe, which was co-created by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
