Fans Say ‘Mean Girls’ Shoutout in ‘Hot Frosty’ Is Movie’s Best Line
Netflix’s Hot Frosty is a lighthearted Christmas rom-com about a snowman (Dustin Milligan, Schitt’s Creek) that comes to life and helps a widow (queen of Christmas movies Lacey Chabert) open her heart again. Just one tiny problem—he’s melting. (Ahem, what did you think the hot in Hot Frosty referred to?)
Filmed in the small Canadian town of Brockville, the movie “has this perfect mix of comedy and the nostalgia of a small town, cozy feel,” Chabert told Country Living in a recent interview.
Fans of unabashedly cheesy Christmas movies and slapstick comedy are relishing every moment of the new movie and having a blast spotting the pop-culture Easter eggs hidden in plain sight throughout, including references to classic Christmas movies, famous rom-coms (that Pretty Woman scene!), and even past projects of the Hot Frosty cast. That brings us to the Mean Girls reference everyone is talking about.
As you may recall, Chabert’s Mean Girls co-star Lindsay Lohan made her own Netflix debut in the holiday rom-com Falling for Christmas in 2022. In Hot Frosty, there’s a scene in which Falling for Christmas is on TV. Seeing Lohan on screen, Chabert’s character Kathy remarks, “That is so funny. That looks like a girl I went to high school with.”
Pretty soon, fans were buzzing about the line in the comments of a Netflix Facebook post promoting Hot Frosty, with some going so far as to say it was the “best line” of the movie.
“My cat jumped in the air when I cackled,” wrote one fan of their reaction, adding, “Mean Girls is an annual fall watch for me, so of course I’ve seen it twice in the last month!”
Netflix caught on that fans were loving the reference and devoted social media posts across platforms to the classic moment.
After that, the fan comments really began to roll in, including many nods to Chabert’s Mean Girls character, Gretchen Wieners. Others couldn’t believe that the line went over their heads: “Wait did this actually happen and I missed it?” one lamented.
