Fans Say They "Adore" Tyler Perry After He Shares Emotional Moment with Kelly Clarkson
Tyler Perry is embracing a new side of himself these days, and it's coming from doing some emotional work.
The media mogul is famous for starring and producing award-winning projects, and he went on The Kelly Clarkson Show on March 20 to promote his new film, Duplicity. While Tyler and host Kelly Clarkson had a lot to talk about, the conversation slowly turned to a topic that isn't always discussed on daytime TV: therapy.
While many would've shied away from a subject like this, Tyler was honest in sharing how therapy has helped him in this stage of his life. What's more, he expressed how grateful he is to have discovered new things about himself while going on this self-care journey in his 50s.
"There was this program that I went to that was phenomenal," he told Kelly in a clip posted on YouTube. "I had never done therapy in my life, and I was just at a point in my life where it felt like things were breaking. I was holding so much up and I was like, 'I gotta go figure out what this is, or I'm not gonna be any good.'"
"What happens is, you can handle it [for] 10, 20 years," he added. "Somewhere around 40, 50, that thing starts to get really heavy — and for me, turning 50 was really rough. So, I did this thing at 54 and found out some amazing things about myself. [I] encouraged myself, lined it up with what I pray and believe, and it has been life changing for me."
But taking care of himself wasn't the only reason behind Tyler deciding to go to therapy. He also noted that he wanted to set a good example for his son Aman (who was born in 2014) for how to handle tough situations he may endure in the future.
"Listen — I'm a fighter. I've been fighting all my life, I know how to do that," he noted. "But now I have a child who has to see this stuff, you know?... You want to see a lion come outta me? When you start dealing with my kid that way, then we got a problem."
Upon seeing Tyler get candid about his reasons for going to therapy, many applauded him for his openness.
"Look at Tyler healing and making new art. Oh, this era is going to be unprecedented," one person wrote. "Tyler is so talented!!" another agreed. "Absolutely adore Tyler Perry," someone else wrote on YouTube.
We're so proud of Tyler for all of this!
