Tyler Perry Was "Moved to Tears" by This Actress's Heartfelt Gesture
Tyler Perry doesn't often find himself getting emotional over his work — but thanks to Kerry Washington, that just changed.
Back in December 2024, Kerry starred as Major Charity Adams in Tyler's movie The Six Triple Eight on Netflix. The film, following the real-life Women's Army Corps unit of color in World War II, garnered critical acclaim, and Kerry received the Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture trophy at the 2025 NAACP Image Awards on February 22.
While Kerry thanked Tyler (who directed the project) for believing in what she could do, she seemed to forget that she had given him praise for his work on the film. After trying to speak into the mic which had been turned off as the announcer welcomed the next presenters, Kerry joined Clifton Davis and Karla Mosley back on stage. She attempted to thank Tyler, before being reminded by the audience that she had in fact already done so.
"I did not thank Tyler Perry," she said in a clip posted on BET's Instagram. After hearing the audience's reaction, she asked, "I did?"
"You did," the announcer reassured her. The audience broke out in raucous cheers and applause before Karla added, "Let's all thank Tyler Perry!"
Tyler shared a video of the moment on his own Instagram page, and included a heartfelt message for Kerry in the caption. "Wow!! MOVED TO TEARS," he emotionally wrote on February 23. "I can honestly tell you that I live my life never, ever doing a good thing expecting something in return … I give, do, help, try, and lift us up because IT’S JUST THE RIGHT THING TO DO.
Why did this move me so much? Because I've helped thousands of people — literally thousands of people — live better lives, and I can honestly say, for me to receive a THANK YOU is very rare," he added. "So to see someone interrupt a live show to say thank you when she already had moved me to tears."
Shortly after he uploaded the poignant note online, Kerry made sure to publicly thank him again in the comments.
"The love and respect and gratitude are REAL! (And I’m saying that in my OUTSIDE voice 🤣)," Kerry replied.
Folks loved seeing how Tyler reacted to Kerry's unexpected yet sincere TV blunder. "This was my favorite part of the show 😂😂😂 we love you Tyler!" one person wrote in the comments. "If 'You gotta take care of those who take care of you' was a person 👏🏽👏🏽♥️♥️🎉🎉🙏🏽🙏🏽," another declared. "Double The Reward 😭💜," a different follower added.
As some may remember, this isn't the first time Tyler has called out Kerry on social media. Kerry was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in December 2024, and he shared his pride in everything Kerry had worked with an earnest tribute on Instagram.
We so adore their friendship!
