Meghan Markle Pays Tribute to Princess Diana in the Most Iconic Way

Meghan Markle never got to meet her mother-in-law Princess Diana—but recently, the Duchess of Sussex paid tribute to her in the most iconic way.

On Sunday, Feb. 24, Markle took to her Instagram Stories with an unexpected hat-tip to the former Princess of Wales, who died in a car crash in 1997.

"A small break from work to soak in the weekend," the former Suits star captioned one of her clips.

Alongside videos of the "first blooms and blossoms of the year," her dog, garden, and more, Markle included a quick clip showing off her look: a purple sweatshirt with "Northwestern" in white lettering.

Although Markle graduated from Northwestern in 2003, royal fans immediately recognized the tribute to her late mother-in-law. Princess Diana wore an identical sweatshirt in 1996, completing the look with white shorts, tennis shoes and sunglasses.

It's unclear if Markle rocked the actual shirt worn by Diana or just a similar one.

The Northwestern shirt wasn't the first time Markle seemingly channeled Princess Diana through fashion. In May 2024, she rocked a gold collar necklace and matching earrings during a trip to Nigeria with Prince Harry. Her accessories reminded royal fans of Lady Di's look while visiting the country in 1990.

During that same trip, Markle also wore Princess Diana's cross necklace, a gift from Harry.

Previously, Markle and Prince Harry paid tribute to Princess Diana in a much bigger way when they included her moniker in their daughter's name: Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. Her first name, Lilibet, was also a nod to Prince Harry's grandmother Queen Elizabeth II's nickname.

In addition to Lilibet, 3, Markle and Prince Harry share a son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, 5.

Prince Harry opened up about how his wife reminded him of his mother in many ways during the Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan.

"So much of what Meghan is and how she is, is so similar to my mom," he explained. "She has the same compassion. She has the same empathy, she has the same confidence. She has this warmth about her."
