Tyla Wears a Blue Version of Aaliyah’s Roberto Cavalli Animal Print Dress from the 2000 MTV VMAs

Tyla wore the dress on Sunday, Nov. 10, at the MTV EMAs ceremony, where she took home three awards

Tyla took some outfit inspiration from Aaliyah.

For the MTV European Music Awards on Sunday, Nov. 10, the "Water" singer sported a blue version of the Roberto Cavalli dress that the "Back & Forth" songstress famously wore to the 2000 MTV VMAs.

Tyla, 22, accessorized the iconic look with a silver choker and strappy black heels that went up to her knees.

When the late Aaliyah wore the dress 24 years ago, hers was a yellow version, paired with a more classic strappy heel along with red lipgloss and white nail polish.

The dress features a zebra-like striped pattern with a slit up one leg and fur-like fringe along the hem. A short train completes the already bold fashion statement.

Cavalli's dress has inspired different iterations of the look. Model Paloma Elsesser wore a version of the dress in 2021, while influencer Bretman Rock wore the actual dress to the 2021 MTV VMAs, per Teen Vogue.

Fans on X (formerly Twitter) were quick to call out the similarities between Tyla and Aaliyah's looks. "The Aaliyah Roberto Cavalli dress will ALWAYS be famous!" one user wrote. "I knew this looked familiar, cuteeee," another said, recalling Aaliyah's look.

"Aaliyah the influence you have on generations after. 🤗," a third person wrote. Others called out the Y2K nostalgia factor of the outfit. "The dress is giving y2k for me omg," someone pointed out.

Tyla performed her songs "Water" and "Push 2 Start" at the 30th edition of the MTV EMAs, which took place at Manchester’s Co-Op Live Arena in England. She also took home three awards: best R&B best Afrobeats and best African act.

When Aaliyah wore the bold animal-inspired dress back in 2000, she was nominated for three VMAs and took home two for best female video and best video from a film for her song "Try Again."

Cavalli, who died in April 2024, was known for his love of animal prints and designed pieces for many A-lists celebrities throughout his storied career.
