Today's Allison Langdon confronts Karl Stefanovic over Ubergate scandal: 'Oops'

Karl Stefanovic was left shocked after his Today co-host Allison Langdon brought up his memorable 2018 ‘Ubergate’ saga while discussing Australia’s most recent political scandal.

Alongside guests Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie and 2GB radio host Chris Smith, the TV stars were sharing their thoughts on former NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian’s explosive leaked texts calling Prime Minister Scott Morrison a ‘psycho’ and a ‘horrible person’.

The unknown source who leaked the texts between a current Liberal minister and Gladys, who has since said she does not recall sending them, has since been urged to come forward.

Talking about the incident on Thursday morning, Karl slammed the mystery person who leaked the scathing messages.

“I need to say this,” he began. “For whoever it was who sent that message, no matter how much you hate someone, it is a pretty low act and, you know, whoever did that is a complete and utter coward.

“Not coming forward I think makes it even worse. I mean, bagging your work colleagues like that.”

Allison then chimed in to remind Karl that he was involved in a very similar situation almost four years ago when a private phone conversation with his brother Peter was leaked to the media.

“Hang on, hang on, hang on,” she said with her arms crossed.

“What would you prefer to do? Just say something about people in the back of an Uber or something?”

Karl was visibly stunned by his co-star’s comments, which was also met with stifled laughter from producers on-set and shocked reactions from Jacqui and Chris.

“Well, well, well, yes,” Karl replied after a moment of hesitation, followed by Allison who looked into the camera and said, “Oops”.

Back in March 2018 Karl and his brother Peter made headlines when details leaked of the pair’s private phone call in which they spoke unfavourably of their Channel Nine colleagues.

New Idea published an interview with an Uber driver who claimed to have heard their entire 45-minute speaker-phone conversation when Peter sat in the backseat.

As well as allegedly accusing his then-co-host Georgie Gardner of ‘sitting on the fence’, the driver claimed that Karl had criticised her for not having enough opinions.

Karl was ultimately dumped from the network in late 2018 following the incident, with Deborah Knight selected as his replacement, although he returned to Today in 2020 with new co-host Allison Langdon.
