Timothy Olyphant 'screwed up' an “Office” scene with Steve Carell because he 'couldn't stop laughing': 'He's incredible'
Olyphant says "there's a little bit of disappointment still there" because it "would have been a really good scene."
Steve Carell can make even the most serious dramatic actor break.
Timothy Olyphant learned that firsthand during his two-episode arc on the seventh season of The Office. "I don't remember anything difficult about the show, other than I do remember laughing," the Justified actor revealed on a recent episode of Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey's Office Ladies podcast.
"I'm sure I screwed up what would have been a really good scene because with Carell where I just couldn't stop laughing," Olyphant explained. "It was so intense and funny, and there's a little bit of disappointment still there, that I could not keep a straight face."
The scene in question never aired, but is included among the deleted scenes in various season 7 and full series home video releases.
In the scene, Carell's Michael stands in front of a glass door, blocking the exit of Olyphant's Danny Cordray, a slick, successful traveling salesman from Osprey Paper. "Do you want your life to be better, or worse, or stay the same?" Carell asks. Olyphant simply responds, "Get out of my way." All Carell has to say is, "Danny, look at me," and the pair both break into uproarious laughter.
"He's incredible," Olyphant said of Carell. "He's fully committed. And I'm quite certain, I haven't seen it, you know, that I'm the one busting up more than he is."
After discovering the scene does exist online and on Office home releases, Olyphant expressed his gratitude that, "At least it's got a life somewhere." He added that Carell "was really impressive. He was very committed. I have fond memories of my experience, you know, just in general. I just remember enjoying the whole thing."
Olyphant remembers the experience fondly, but he's hard-pressed to call forth specific details. When asked by Fischer and Kinsey if he had trouble adjusting to looking at the camera, Olyphant had to first clarify, "Am I on one episode or multiple episodes?"

It's revealed after Michael hires Danny to work for Dunder Mifflin that the new recruit previously dated Pam (Fischer) when her husband and coworker Jim (John Krasinski) transferred to the Stamford branch and was dating Rashida Jones's Karen Filippelli. Fischer explained that after she and Jim press Danny to reveal why he ghosted her after two dates, "you eventually admit that it's because you thought I was a little dorky."
"I do remember that," Olyphant said, slightly hazy. "It was so fun."
