Tim Allen Took Dance Classes with His Daughter Before Her Wedding — and Cried Twice on Her Big Day

Tim the Tool Man turned into Tim the Tear Man for the sweetest reason.

During his appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark on Thursday, Jan. 9, Tim Allen, 71, promoted his new ABC sitcom, Shifting Gears, and opened up about his eldest daughter's wedding. Until now, details of Katherine Allen's nuptials have been kept under wraps.

The Santa Clause actor welcomed his first daughter in December 1989 with then-wife Laura Deibel. The couple eventually separated in 1999 and finalized their divorce in 2003. He later married Jane Hajduk in October 2006 and welcomed his second daughter, Elizabeth Allen-Dick, in March 2009.

Co-host Kelly Ripa excitedly pointed out that Tim's "oldest daughter got married," before asking him how much the big day cost.

Although Tim felt that it was "kind of a personal question," he decided to answer anyway.

"A lot!" he admitted. "It’s like one thing after another."

He then shared to Ripa and Mark Consuelos that he actually took dance classes with Katherine before the wedding.

"She asked me though, she’s a really serious girl. And she said, ‘I want you to do the father-daughter dance.’ And I said, ‘Yeah, I get that.’ And she goes, ‘I don’t trust you not to screw it up,' " Tim recalled. "So she wanted me to go to dance academy class."

Tim said even he was "shocked" that he agreed to it.

"It was six, one-hour sessions with this instructor and back and forth…" Tim began before Ripa, 54, quipped, "That doesn’t seem like enough if I’m going to be honest."

"Wow. Wow. Pull the knife out, that’s really kind of hurtful!" he jokingly replied.

Learning choreography wasn't easy, but his dancing and DJing wowed wedding guests in the end.

"I was embarrassed 'cause one, for college for a while I was a disc jockey on a big discotheque, and I knew how to do it on stage. It was wonderful 'cause when we got out there, I was able to do it with my daughter for a big crowd," he said. "And it was worth it; mostly that because I did it and my daughter was amazed that I went and did it."

The ceremony was even more emotional than the reception.

While Tim didn't shed any tears when he walked his oldest daughter down the aisle, but he did reveal he had some emotional moments throughout the day.

"I was crying before it and then when I did that speech, right in the middle of it, I broke down," he said.

Consuelos, 53, joked that the father of the bride likely also cried when he "signed the check at the end."

In response, Tim laughed and pretended to cry while writing a check.

"Yeah, 'Where am I ever going to get this kind of money…' But it was in pesos, so that was good," he joked.

Other details about the wedding have not been publicly shared. In the past, Katherine has said that she prefers to stay out of the spotlight.

Meanwhile, Tim's youngest daughter is more comfortable with being in the public eye, having followed in her dad's acting footsteps with her debut role on Disney+’s The Santa Clauses. In the hit series, which first premiered in 2022 and returned for season 2 in November 2023, Elizabeth played the onscreen daughter of Tim's Santa Claus.

Shifting Gears premiered on Wednesday, Jan. 8 on ABC, and follows a widowed father (Tim) and his estranged daughter (Kat Dennings) who find themselves living together and working to repair their relationship.
