TikTokers roast Australia's controversial Olympic uniforms: 'Giving Kath and Kim'

The Olympic Games certainly aren’t known for their fashion, but in a city as chic as Paris it’s no surprise that countries are putting their best foot forward with their athletes’ costumes this year. While the French are looking stylish in modern tuxedos by Berluti, Americans are rocking bold looks by Ralph Lauren, and Canadians are standing out in red and white Lululemon fits, Australia’s green and gold uniforms by Sportscraft are being roasted on TikTok.

Former AFL footballer Dan Gorringe (@dandoesfooty) has gone viral on the social media platform this week after he shared a video comparing our style to our competitors alongside the question: “Why does everyone look good but us?”.

“So did Australia miss the memo on the Olympics becoming Fashion Week?” he remarked.

They showed photos of Team Mongolia’s striking opening ceremony uniforms by Michel&Amazonka, Haiti’s traditional-yet-contemporary outfits by Haitian-Italian designer Stella Jean, and Taiwan’s eco-friendly attire designed by the founder of Just In XX, Justin Chou.

After complimenting their ensembles as “unbelievable”, “cool” and “a fashion statement”, Dan showed Australia’s opening ceremony uniforms. The athletes must wear a green double-breasted linen blazer with a green and gold ombre pleated skirt or stone-coloured chino shorts.

“What in the private school is this?” he said. “Thank god there aren’t medals for best dressed because we wouldn’t even touch a bronze medal, let alone a gold or silver.

While some people took to the comments to admit they liked Australia’s “smart casual” look, a majority of users said we “missed the mark” and the outfits are “so uncool”.

“It’s giving private sports school vibes,” one person wrote, while another said, “It actually looks like they just won a chess tournament or something”.

“We look like we are about to chant ‘sliding down a waterfall, landing on a cactus!’ at a primary school sports carnival,” a third joked.

“It’s giving Kath and Kim,” someone else shared, followed by a different user who agreed, “It’s giving Sharon Strzelecki”.

“Ours looks so cheap compared to other countries,” one follower commented, with another adding, “I can’t remember an Olympics where we looked good”.

The viral post comes shortly after Matildas players Mackenzie Arnold and Alanna Kennedy shared a TikTok showing off their uniforms. The pair awkwardly moved around in their outfits while looking extremely underwhelmed and mouthing the popular audio: “Let’s f**king go? Let’s go, I guess?”.

The video was simply captioned with the melting face emoji and has since received over 37 million views at the time of writing.

Athletes at the Olympics are given a number of uniforms to wear while they're not competing, as well as ones for the opening and closing ceremonies. For the first time ever, the Australian Olympians’ Oath will be on the inside jacket pocket of blazers worn for the opening ceremony featuring the names of all 301 Australian Olympic champions throughout the jacket lining.

The outfits will also feature Indigenous artwork ‘Walking Together’ from Olympic boxer Paul Fleming in the pocket square and scarf and the Olympians’ oath on the inside lining.
