TikTok Dad Feuding with Landon Barker Shocks Fans by Appearing in His Video: Here's What Really Went Down (Exclusive)

Steven Schenberg tells PEOPLE how his anticipated in-person collaboration with Landon Barker came to be and whether their TikTok "internet battle" is finally over

It might be safe to say, a truce has been made between Landon Barker and the TikTok dad who initiated the "internet battle" that's taken over — well, at this point — everyone's FYP.

For those who aren't familiar, here's what went down: 37-year-old Steven Schenberg (known as “HusbandTikTok" online) uploaded a TikTok that took a playful dig at the 21-year-old musician and his apparent obsession with The Fray's "Look After You" song used in countless of his videos on the app.

Since uploading the first video that poked fun at Barker (and his rumored romance with Stassie Karanikolaou) on Dec. 25, Schenberg has posted a playlist-worthy amount of takes using the song as his backing and tagged the content creator. On the fourth video, Barker commented.

His response not only sparked a playful feud (or "beef," as the Gen-Z users say) between the two, further resulting in more back-and-forth videos with The Fray set as musical backing, but it engaged the viewers-turned-invested fans to the point of demanding an in-person meet-up with each other.

And guess what? They did just that, as seen in a new TikTok video shared by Schenberg, who surprises viewers when he pans to Barker lip-syncing in the background to — you guessed — The Fray's "Look After You" uploaded on Thursday, Jan. 16.

Schenberg told PEOPLE about it all in an exclusive interview the next day, from how the highly-anticipated collaboration with Barker came to be to what's next for the viral sensations (especially in the wake of the TikTok ban beginning on Jan. 19).

"Once these videos started picking up some steam, I just DM'd Landon," the dad of four tells PEOPLE exclusively on Friday, Jan. 17. "He responded... we texted back and forth to try to make this happen," he explains in the days that followed Barker's viral comment on his video.

They quickly sorted out a few logistics, Schenberg hopped on a flight and off to Barker's house he went.

"I'll just say that I had no preconceived notion of Landon prior to going out there," the content creator tells PEOPLE. "The text messages were all very cordial and friendly and fun. I assumed that's probably how the interaction was going to go, but I didn't know."

Schenberg's hunch was right. "It was exactly how it was online. Incredibly friendly, super nice, treated me as a friend and an equal, and he's just such a good guy," he says of meeting Barker in person. "Head on his shoulders."

Despite calling out their age gap and "not" wanting "to sound like a dad," Schenberg praised the rising rocker's good character. "He's just a good kid," he says.

"Clearly, he must have some really good parents who've raised him and individuals around him that have supported him because he's just a good guy and he treated me with the utmost respect," adds Schenberg of Barker, who's the son of Blink-182's Travis Barker and Shanna Moakler.

Schenberg then explained what went into the concept behind their joint video — and of course, there was one nonnegotiable. "The Fray song is a must. I mean, that's no-brainer. The Fray song is a must," he makes clear.

The lyric they used in the video is a comedic nod to the pair's lengthy back-and-forth online that victoriously culminated with the in-person collaboration. "Lost and insecure, you found me, you found me," the lyrics play as they lip-sync them together.

As for whether their grand get-together marks an end to their friendly feud?

"I think that the battle may continue in other avenues or in other collaborations — so I guess more to be seen," teases Schenberg, who's taking his content creation efforts to Instagram (@HusbandTikTok) amid the looming TikTok shutdown.

As for TikTok, Schenberg says he would "absolutely" call it a truce between him and Barker's battle. He even had a few parting words to share with him, to make his good intention clear.

"I would just like to say again, thank you to Landon. The opportunity that has presented itself to myself and my family, it doesn't happen without him being able to take a joke and not take himself too seriously, respond and interact... just like a normal guy from Chicago."

He adds, "Kudos to Landon and thank you again for really making me the coolest guy to my wife and to my family."
