The Voice fans divided after US superstar announced as new coach

A global hitmaker will be joining the upcoming twelfth season of the singing competition.

Five months after Keith Urban revealed that he won’t be returning to The Voice Australia as a coach in 2023, Channel Seven has finally announced the global superstar who will be taking his place.

While fans predicted it would be Niall Horan, Adam Lambert or former coaches Delta Goodrem and Ricky Martin, US hitmaker Jason Derulo will be spinning a red chair in the upcoming season.

The 33-year-old singer-songwriter is well known for his string of chart-topping hits such as Talk Dirty, Ridin’ Solo, Whatcha Say and Savage Love, as well as being the ‘King of TikTok’ with more than 57 million followers on the platform.

He’s sold more than 250 million singles worldwide and is currently teasing his fifth studio album - his first in eight years.

Jason said in a statement from Seven: “I've always loved The Voice and Australia happens to be one of my favourite places in the world. I can't wait to hear all the amazing talent down under!”

He will be joining returning coaches Guy Sebastian, Jessica Mauboy and Rita Ora on the upcoming twelfth season of the singing competition, which will begin filming in Sydney in the next few weeks.

Fans react to Jason Derulo

Following the announcement, a number of viewers took to social media to express their disappointment over the new line-up.

“Why can’t we have all talented Aussie judges?” one person commented, followed by another who added, “I’d like to watch with people more relevant to Australia”.

“I prefer an all-Australian judging panel,” a third wrote, to which someone else replied, “That would be awesome and each a representative of different music genres”.

Others admitted they were sad there would be another season of The Voice without Delta Goodrem, who served as a coach on the show for eight years but left in 2021.

“Bring back Delta,” one fan wrote, while someone else said, “I miss Delta”.

“I'm kinda sad for not seeing Delta back on Channel 7,” another shared. “I was really hoping to see her and Rita working together.”

“This is AMAZING,” one follower said, with a different user writing, “What an ICONIC panel”.

“Insane lineup - I would be going with Jason if I had to choose,” another commented.

"Can't wait for this year's competition,” someone else shared, followed by another who remarked, “Looks like I'll have to watch this season.”

“Look at the POC (person of colour) representation,” one fan pointed out.
