The Masked Singer announces first new masks for 2022: 'Amazing'

Just a few weeks after announcing the all-new judging panel, The Masked Singer Australia has now unveiled its first three masks for the upcoming season.

This year’s celebrities will be hiding underneath what Channel Ten has described as “some of the wildest costumes to ever burst onto television screens”.

Designed by Oscar, BAFTA and AFI-winning costume designer Tim Chappel, the three incredible new masks will be Mirrorball, Zombie and Thong.

While viewers are yet to hear the singing voices under each disguise, fans of the reality TV singing competition have already taken to social media to share their celebrity guesses based solely on the visual clues.

“Thong will be Paul Fenech from Thong Warrior,” one person predicted, referencing the comedian’s latest season of Housos.

“I think the mirrorball could be someone who competed on Dancing With The Stars,” another remarked, to which a different user replied, “Ricki-Lee surely is Mirrorball”.

“Surely Taylor Swift is the mirrorball,” someone else shared in relation to the pop star’s album track mirrorball.

Meanwhile, others simply left comments online applauding the creativity of this year’s masks.

“These costumes are amazing!” one fan wrote, followed by another who said, “Great costumes!”.

“Woah, mirrorball is easily the best design in Australia already,” a different user tweeted. “Let's just hope they're a good singer.”

New judging panel

The Masked Singer announced last month that The Project host Chrissie Swan, reality TV icon Abbie Chatfield, and world-famous pop phenomenon Mel B will be joining comedian Dave Hughes on the judging panel in 2022.

In a statement from Channel Ten, the Spice Girl shared her excitement about being a part of the Australian franchise after previously appearing on both the British and Spanish versions of The Masked Singer as a contestant.

“Hello Australia. I have missed you so much but I am back and I can’t wait to get the party started with Hughesy, Abbie and Chrissie,” she said.

“Let me tell you though, I am the best-ever game player and I have something up my sleeve that none of these guys have… I’ve hidden behind these masks as a competitor not once but twice.

“So I’m bringing all my secret inside knowledge to this. But more to the point, I’m bringing the fun. Fasten your seatbelts everyone, it’s going to be a rollercoaster ride.”
