With the upcoming twentieth season of The Block just a few weeks away from premiering, viewers have begun sharing their hopes and predictions for this year’s iteration of the renovation reality series. The new season will take place in Phillip Island with five teams of everyday Aussies transforming rundown holiday homes into luxury properties.

Following last year’s drama-filled season - which involved plenty of screaming matches, strategic gameplay and awkward friendship break-ups - a majority of fans are hoping for a change of pace when the show returns to screens next month. One person shared a post on Reddit this week predicting what the “drama levels” will be like this year, with plenty of people admitting they would like to see the series return to its roots for its milestone season.

“I am yearning for old school, no drama The Block,” a fan wrote, followed by another who said, “Wishing for no drama, expecting drama, hoping to be surprised”.

“I miss the old Block when they had challenges that were building related and the contestants actually did the work,” a third remarked.

“I'm hoping for low drama - I don't find watching all the fighting enjoyable, if I wanted drama I'd be watching B&B [The Bold and the Beautiful]!” someone else commented.

Despite the obvious demand for a more harmonious season with a sole focus on renovations, it’s unlikely The Block will change its winning formula this year as the drama brings the viewers.

Fans have subsequently predicted that the new season will be even more dramatic than previous years, with one person saying that they’re “expecting MAFS with hammers”.

“It’s absolutely going to be drama-filled. That gets ratings and attention, and they have no real reason to edit it differently unfortunately,” another responded, while someone else said, “The drama levels will definitely be high”.

“My theory is the more couples that go with the traditional beige & white styling, the more they have to up the drama to keep things interesting (especially as they all shop at the same stores),” a different user shared.

“It starts with low drama to get everyone hooked, then it will erupt into complete awfulness,” another viewer predicted.

This year’s season of The Block is set to air on Channel Nine in August after the Olympics and is tipped to feature one of the most dramatic storylines in the history of the show.

Yahoo Lifestyle revealed in April that six weeks into shooting the season, one team decided to pull out of the competition. The Blue Team’s Jesse and Paige from Western Australia apparently decided to pull the pin as they buckled under the stress of the high-pressure environment, which a source tells us has been difficult to edit.

“You will just have to wait and see what happens but it is not something Australia has ever seen on The Block before,” a production insider told us.

“The show absolutely has been the most interesting season to edit, mainly due to one team quitting the series. Everyone is running with the whole ‘nothing to see here’ mantra in terms of why the WA team packs up and leaves but there is obviously more to that story.”

Dan Reilly has also become the show’s sole foreman as Keith Schleiger wasn’t able to make the move to Phillip Island, although both Neale and Keith are expected to make guest appearances.
