The Block fans have been left baffled by a 'gross' problem that they've noticed in every team's house. In particular, they are wondering why on earth every team is putting a toilet in the bathroom, given that it would be much more hygienic to have it in its own room.

However, an interior designer tells Yahoo Lifestyle that this is an "outdated" concept and that we "need to get past the idea that a toilet needs to be hidden away".

While that may be the expert's opinion, viewers can't seem to get their heads around the idea of the porcelain throne being in such close proximity to everything else. "It always puzzles me that the acceptable practice on The Block is to stick the loo in the bathroom, often quite close to the hand basin area, and no one, least of all the so-called expert judges, raises the objection to how gross and unhygienic this actually is," one Block viewer wrote on Facebook.

"I don’t know if this practice is reflective of what happens in the majority of new builds these days but I can’t think of anything more disgusting than having microscopic aerosol urine and faecal contaminated particles land on my vanity bench top, my towels, toothbrush and anything else that I may have in my bathroom."

They added, "Please - put the loo in a separate room or at the very least, partition it off so that the bulk of these gross floaters do not end up contaminating everything and putting human health at risk."

The user also shared this video:

It turns out that many people agreed, with one user writing, "I don't understand why on these huge houses they put a toilet in the main bathroom!! It is just not necessary."

"Oh, I’m with you. Toilets need to be in a space of their own," another said.

"Toilets should be in bathrooms... so annoying being in a separate room," a third said, disagreeing.

"Toilet spray is a real thing," someone else said.

"Especially for a holiday house," one user pointed out. "Parties, extra people. It needs its own room just for convenience."

"Agree. I watched the Mythbusters episode where they showed just how much bacteria gets on toothbrushes and surfaces… even when things are sealed and in another room. It's gross," yet another said.

"Alleviated by house training everyone to put the lid down before you flush every time," another said.

Interior designer Chris Carroll of TLC Interiors disagrees with the fans on social media, telling Yahoo Lifestyle that separating the toilet from the bathroom is an "outdated" concept.

"A toilet being in a separate zone to the main bathroom is beneficial from a functional perspective but it’s not possible for some," he tells us. "We do need to get past the idea that a toilet needs to be hidden away behind the bathroom door. Modern loos aren’t ugly. They’re the same colour as a bath, made from similar materials and sport curves just like a bathtub.

"The Block has made a big deal in previous seasons of toilets being seen when you walk past the bathroom as if they’re an eyesore. It’s time to move on from this outdated approach. Toilets can be sexy - you heard it here first!"

If you can't be bothered to watch the video above, according to researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder, germs and bacteria that can transmit infectious diseases (not to mention whatever's actually in the toilet) can spray far and wide when you don't shut the lid before flushing a toilet.

More specifically, these droplets can reach heights of over 1.5 metres (!!), landing on your toothbrush, towels, countertops and whatever else is near the toilet.

Let this be a lesson to all of you who don't shut the toilet lid before flushing!
