The Block: Channel Nine answers massive 2024 season question
With the 20th anniversary of the reno show looming, the rumours have been rife.
With the 20th anniversary of The Block (yes, you read that correctly - 20!) taking place this year, all eyes and ears have been on Channel Nine to see how they would commemorate the momentous occasion.
Will some of the fan favourites from the earlier seasons make a comeback? Will there be some new rules or shocking twists to spice up the existing format while giving a nod to the "cheating scandals" of years past? Will there be more than 5 teams of hopeful home renovators looking to push their relationships to the limit as they squabble over tile colours and skylight placement as free Maccas coffee courses through their veins?
Well, we can reveal that we have the answer to at least one of these questions!
How many teams will compete in The Block 2024?
Nine have confirmed that there will, in fact, only be five teams competing on the series this year with a source saying "We are finalising casting for five houses as we speak."
Rumours had been swirling that a massive 9 teams would be participating in the 2024 season due to the fact Nine has purchased that number of dwellings at the location in Phillip Island. However, the source said that while there had been a lot of discussion about having more teams, "anything more than five teams is too confusing for audiences".
The extra properties - which are currently strategically placed behind walls - will instead be used for production and there is also some speculation that Scott Cam may build his own house too just as he did during the Tree Change season of 2022.
"Don't you worry all of those spaces will be serving a purpose and to be honest it will help us keep a lot of what is happening inside the walls of the old Phillip Island Resort," the source said. "Viewers wouldn't know this but we often buy other residents or rent them just for the The Block headquarters."

Will past contestants come back to The Block 2024?
And, as for any returning renovators? The source said that it would be too soon to bring back anyone from the 2023 season so if they were to look at bringing some fan favourites back it would more likely be from season one.
"At this stage, we can't confirm or deny if some of the original contestants might take part in the show," they said.
"I think Amity Dry and Gaz and Waz would be fun for Australia to see where they are now but the right cast will be formed based on the best talent we can find. Maybe they will all be new faces - which won't stop us from celebrating a pretty impressive milestone."
They added: "It seemed like an obvious choice to do a 'Fans vs Favourites' but the show has always been about putting the most exciting characters available into this challenging experience."
