The baby names falling out of favour with Australians revealed
Aussies are turning their backs on these baby names.
If you’ve had a baby recently or know someone who’s welcomed a bundle of joy into their lives, chances are you’ll have heard of many of the top baby names in Australia for 2023.
However, there’s a list of names that are falling in popularity amongst Aussies and some of them may surprise you.
McCrindle Research has released its annual findings of the top baby names in Australia for 2023 after states and territories release the names of every child born.
They then compile the data, analyse the trends and release the McCrindle Baby Names Report, with this year's clear winners being Charlotte for girls and Oliver for boys.
Speaking to 9Honey Parenting, social researcher Ashley Fell revealed the list of names that many Aussies are turning their back on.

The number one boy's name falling in popularity is Matthew, which fell 38 ranks in 2023, followed closely by Jaxon (down 34 ranks), Joshua (down 28 ranks), Caleb (down 26 ranks) and Ryder (down 25 ranks).
When it comes to girls' names Aussies are shunning, Anna had the biggest drop, falling 38 ranks. That was followed by Frankie, Hannah and Riley (who all fell 15 ranks) and Eliza, which fell 12 ranks.
Interestingly, Lucas and Thomas also fell out of the top 10 baby names for the first time in more than 10 years.
Top baby names for 2023
Astonishingly, Oliver has topped the most popular boys' name in Australia for the tenth year in a row.
Over 2,000 babies were born in Australia with the moniker, followed by 1,896 with the name Noah, 1,506 with the name Leo, 1,368 with the name William and 1,323 with the name Henry.
Theodore made its top 10 appearance for the first time this year, pushing Lucas and Thomas out of the top list.
For girls, Charlotte has reclaimed the top spot after a brief fall to second place in 2022. This year’s second place winner was Amelia with 1,374 occurrences, Isla with 1,355 occurrences, Olivia with 1,271 occurrences and Mia, with 1,178 occurrences.
Names on the rise
According to the data, the names Aussies might be hearing a lot of over the next few years are Reuben, Remy and Theo for boys and Margot, Thea and Maeve for girls.
They also said parents are looking for ways to make traditional names stand out more, with Sophia becoming Sofia and Holly taking the form of Hallie.
Gender Neutral baby names
As well as being creative, parents are increasingly on the lookout for gender-neutral baby names, with the research showing names such as Charlie, Riley, Jordan, Casey, Jamie and Taylor are becoming more popular.
