10 nature-inspired baby names on the rise in the UK

A popular fruit has been named as one of the top nature-inspired baby names on the rise in the UK, according to a new study.

Clementine has seen a 57% increase in use between 2020 and 2021 as parents seek to give their children more unique monikers.

A total of 300 British babies were called Clementine in 2021 compared to 2020, data from online toy retailer Play Like Mum found when comparing 200 nature-inspired names to official baby name data.

Flora saw the second highest increase, rising from 184 in 2020 to 283 in 2021, a 54% increase. Ocean (52%), Raven (42%) and Olive (40%) came in third, fourth and fifth place respectively.

Nova saw a 39% increase, rising from 410 in 2020 to 571 in 2021, while August, River, Wren and Rowan all saw increases between 20% and 30%.

The study also revealed the top girls' and boys' nature-inspired baby names in the UK, with Lily, Poppy and Ruby reigning supreme for girls, while Leo, Rowan and Jasper topped the boys’ list.

Leo has been the moniker of choice for over 43,000 baby boys born in the UK between 2010 and 2021. It trumps the second name on the boys’ list – Raven – by far as Raven has only been the name for 7,884 babies in the same time period.

According to the Office for National Statistics, Olivia and Oliver are both currently the top baby girl and baby boy names respectively in the UK.
