Top 10 'bogan baby names' revealed

Aussie parents have been giving their kids weird, wacky and un-ewe-sual first names for a while now, it seems.

While she may be fictional, new mum Kim of bogan comedy Kath & Kim gave her daughter the creatively spelled, double-barrelled moniker, Epponnee-Raelene Kathleen Darlene Charlene Craig back in 2003.

Just last week, a Byron Bay couple revealed their struggle to come up with an unusual name for their fourth child - a brother to Atlas, Everest and Zephyr - and the one they finally settled on might just be illegal.

And now we have a definitive list of the most popular ‘bogan names’ for baby boys and girls born in 2019 courtesy of The Little Book of Bogan Baby Names author, Sabrina Rogers-Anderson, and Kidspot.

What’s in a name?

In her article for Kidspot, Sabrina tops her list for girls with ‘Anomaly,’ a word defined in the dictionary as ‘something that deviates from what is standard, normal, or expected’ - which is rather fitting for such a strange name.

Next is ‘Antwohnette,’ a bogan-ified version of the French name Antoinette, followed by ‘Charmayanne’ which is honestly giving us major K&K vibes.

In fourth place, we have ‘Panda,’ the endangered black and white bear which, while cute, is also known to eat its own poo and not be particularly bright.

And what about the boys?

The boys’ list is similarly filled with gems including ‘Brayan' - a combo that offers the best of both Bryan and Ryan - and ‘Kanaan’ which Sabrina suspects is “a variation of Cannon”.

‘Kairo’ comes in third as a unique and rather unnecessary take on Cairo, while other parents are clearly looking beyond Earth to the solar system for names, plucking failed ‘dwarf’ planet, Pluto, from the cosmos.

While the name Pluto may be out of this world - as well as the Roman god of the Underworld - at least it’s not Uranus.

‘Precise’ rounds out the top five and may prove a hard name to live up to.

Not all hope is lost

Fortunately, none of the monikers shared by Sabrina Rogers-Anderson have made it onto 2019’s most popular baby name list, with many Aussies going for more traditional choices.

When it comes to girls, Charlotte comes out on top according to research body McCrindlel, which is hardly a surprise considering it’s the name the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge chose for their only daughter.

Charlotte has held the top spot in Australia for four years in a row, with 1,673 baby girls given the name last year.
