“Tell Me Lies ”Season 2 Trailer: Lucy and Stephen Teeter Along the Thin Line Between Love and Hate

The Hulu series returns for its long-awaited second season on Sept. 4, and the creator recently told PEOPLE Lucy is "out for revenge"

Is Stephen really in Lucy's rearview mirror?

On Thursday, Aug. 8, Hulu released the first trailer for Tell Me Lies season 2, which premieres with the first two episodes on Sept. 4, and it looks like Lucy (Grace Van Patten) has her sights set on a new love interest: Leo (Thomas Doherty).

The trailer begins with Lucy's friend Lydia (Natalee Linez) asking if she's "nervous" about returning for sophomore year at Baird College after the chaos of her first year, thanks to Stephen (Jackson White).

"If that little gremlin even looks in your direction, call me. Same goes for his girlfriend," she warns, referring to Stephen and Diana (Alicia Crowder).

Lucy claims she's "not even worried" about her ex, that she was in "some sort of delusional state last year" while she was dating him, but as fans know, things never really seem to end between Lucy and Stephen.

She continues to insist that she's over it, telling Pippa (Sonia Mena) and Bree (Cat Missal), "I just wanna focus on school this semester, I don't even wanna talk to guys."

But, as Stephen tends to do, he's worming his way back in. "Lucy, I am really sorry for hurting you so badly last year," he tells her in the dining hall. "I embarrassed you over and over again and I'm sure that made you feel terrible about yourself."

That prompts a response out of her, as she tells him, "You're right, I am still mad. And I know you probably love that, but I swear if you keep doing this, I will destroy your life."

Meanwhile, Leo has eyes for Lucy, and things get steamy with a brand-new hottie for her, who promises her he won't "be awful" to her like Stephen was.

Things between Bree and Evan (Branden Cook) are tense, too, as Evan's still holding onto his and Lucy's secret hookup from last year, and Bree seems to form a connection with a hot new professor, Oliver (Tom Ellis).

The trailer ends with the ultimate tease: an intense moment between Lucy and Stephen as he tells her, "I don't think you hate me at all," and she replies, her face inches from his, "I promise you I do."

Per the official synopsis, season 2 picks up with the gang's return to college, and Lucy and Stephen are "not speaking after their dramatic breakup at the start of the summer."

"While very much at odds, they find themselves in a new version of their addictive dynamic - which is as infuriating as it is inescapable," the description continues.

Season 2 is also poised to further explore "the lives of Lucy and Stephen’s friend group, as the fallout from season one impacts all of their lives in unexpected ways."

Series creator Meagan Oppenheimer recently told PEOPLE that the new season is "more of a war story than a love story" as Lucy is "out for revenge."

"It's definitely still Lucy and Stephen at the core," she said. "They're definitely the through line of the show. But my intention going into this show, even from season one, was: What are the repercussions within a friend group from one central set of lies?"

Teasing Leo's relationship with Lucy in particular, she called Doherty's character "a true love rival to Stephen and someone that we could really see Lucy with – whether or not the audience will root for him."
