Taylor Zakhar Perez is hoping for triple the Red, White and Royal Blue fun.
The star of the LGBT romantic comedy, 32, spoke to Variety on the red carpet at the Primetime Emmy Awards red carpet on Sunday, Sept. 15. Asked if during filming he thought a sequel would follow, Perez said, “I think I hoped.”
A sequel to Red, White and Royal Blue, again costarring Perez and Nicholas Galitzine, is now in the works, distributor Amazon MGM Studios announced on May 10. Of the 2019 source material by Casey McQuiston, the Emmys presenter continued, “It was a great book and it kind of left you hanging after you read it.”

Asked by Variety’s reporter whether Red, White and Royal Blue could become a musical, he responded with a laugh. “Hey, that would be fun! As long as the musical’s funny. We need a very funny musical.”
Directed and co-written by Matthew López, Red, White and Royal Blue became a hit upon its July 2023 release. It costarred Uma Thurman, Sarah Shahi, Stephen Fry, Clifton Collins Jr. and Rachel Hilson.
At this year's Emmy Awards, the film was nominated for outstanding television movie. (The category’s winner, announced last weekend, was Quiz Lady.)

Speaking to PEOPLE upon the movie’s release last August, López, 47, said that “queer audiences don't actually get to participate in fairy tales themselves too often… It's interesting because it feels like queer audiences are one of the main consumers of such stories, and yet we didn't have a lot of our own."
López and McQuiston, who teamed up for the first, are writing an all-new screenplay for the sequel.
